If anyone wants to try it its The Swan at Newland on the outskirts of Malvern and is a great pub but if you want to eat it is advisable to book as it is so popular with the lovely people who live in and around Malvern. Never met the landlord but can report that everyone there is lovely. One late lunch time we were sitting there long after everyone else had left and the waitress came to say she was going off now but to stay as long as we liked and if we wanted anything else to go to the bar. She didn't even ask us to pay, just trusted us to do so at the bar before we left.

It is well supported so has no need for the grumpy or those without a sense of humour.

That pub I think I would have liked. It's lovely when you get a landlord with a genuine sense of humour.

Actually, I'd bet, if you did actually ask him for a jug of iced water with the meal, he would supply one, turning into a mealy mouthed bowing and scraping idiot at the same time. And it would have a slice of lime.

Having read all this, very interesting, it brought back memories of a pub we used to pass regularly which usually had an appropriate 'quip' written on a board outside - the one I remember best is "Due to the drought, our beers are being served at full strength". There was another when Diana was killed - "Remember William and Harry", that was all. Never went in the pub, but the car park was invariably busy. I thought the pub menu mentioned here was very good, and made it's position clear. I would be amused, rather than offended

Sounds like my kind of place - and the menu back made me chuckle. Certainly nothing to get all pursed lips over...

S/he also had a go at people who wanted a drink of water with their meal, if I understood the 'message' on the menu correctly!

Each to their own I suppose but this does seem to be directed at bad parenting which unfortunately is seemingly becoming a lot more evident as the years roll on or is it that we are becoming less tolerant with advancing years. I would think the former.

I do not disagree that kids /adults should behave appropriately in pubs/restaurants etc and am pleased to say that the DGC are able to do so! As a teacher I always preferred to find a pub /restaurant that was fairly child free if I wanted to relax! I had enough of children during working hours.

I have a sense of humour but I don't really like sarcasm and the comments on the menu referred to in OP sounded a bit sarcastic. That's all!

People who do not expect their own children to behave in a civilised manner in a public place are highly unlikely to pay any attention to nonsense on the back of the menu. Indeed, adults who don't behave in a civilised manner are unlikely to pay any attention either.

aka I agree with you. Both these pubs have great service and a great atmosphere. Perhaps if the landlord didn't make his point in such a witty way they would be overrun with brats, who knows. If however, his wit keeps out people without a sense of humour that is good too.

I don't think parents would dare to leave their children outside a pub these days, either in or out of a car. They would all be too concerned about abduction.

speki I think it is great for hotels to make their child policy clear, it means we all know what to expect. A hotel we have been to twice has a main pool with music and stuff happenning, another which has no music and nothing going on except a swim up bar which seems to attract quieter people, with or without children and one for adults only. It seems to suit us all and allow all types to enjoy their holiday. We like the quieter one that allows children because it is great to watch them enjoying themselves.

Yes, specki my parents would stop for a break on the way from a day out in Blackpool, and leave the four of us in the car with lemonade and crisps. In the late 50s, I would be the eldest at about 10, with sisters 8 and 6, and brother 4.

Last week, I sat with 4 children and a baby in one car, whilst mums and dads dashed into the supermarket for fresh supplies whilst on holiday. They were only gone 10 minutes, during which time I was soothing the crying baby and the 4, 6 and 7 year olds adjusted the lights, wing mirrors and radio. How the heck my parents managed to leave us and trust us not to get into mischief, I cannot fathom....but they did! Perhaps they would have sat still if I hadn't been there!

Who remembers sitting in the car outside the pub whilst parents went in for a drink? they brought out a bottle of pop and a packet of crisps and expected us to behave to behave ~ Funnily enough, we did and the parents weren't visited by Esther Rantzen either!

Club Med have a great way of dealing with this issue in their holiday resorts - child-adapted resorts have 'Kid's Club' and 'Baby Club' appended to their advertising - visitors are expected to understand that if no such flags are attached, then they have no facilities there for children. You then make your choice as to whether you visit or not.

Everyone has a right to enjoy their own particular style of relaxation - whether it be quiet and peaceful or lively and noisy. My parents in their latter years used to love to go to places where they could watch children playing (yes and they were the same parents who left us, as children, in the car whilst they went into the pub!) funny old world.

With you there Aka. These notices are aimed at the ones who think their children are well behaved and aren't. Must be dreadful losing custom because of parents who can't control their children.

We took our grandchildren for a pub lunch recently and were shocked by the behaviour of another group with children the same age. Eventually the manager came over and asked the party to leave saying don't bother to pay, just go. She was then treated to such verbal abuse such as I've never heard before until some of our party stood up and asked them, for the sake of our children and theirs to tone it down and leave.
This is not just 'a typical surly British attitude' towards children but more a reaction towards certain types of families who do not know how to behave in public. Happily they are in the minority but I do think there was a reason behind the message on the back of the menu.

just been to a traditional old pub for supper..one we had not visited before..no signs or rules just the menu..which was good pub fare plus lovely pizzas made in a traditional wood burning oven..yum!
Busy with mixed clientele in the early evening including families with (well behaved) kids and dog walkers with equally well-behaved dogs. Smiling and friendly staff..my kind of place!
