A course away?

Just before my husband retired, his union ran a course for members and their partners. We found it helpful - it confirmed some of the choices we were thinking of making and gave a different view to consider. The other people were great too. If you can find such a course, I think it's a great idea

I googled 'retirement courses' and quite a lot came up. I have no experience of them. My employer used to offer them to all retirees, but as I left under a 'voluntary' redundancy scheme aka early retirement scheme I qualified for a number of courses, but not the retirement courses - I was too young!

A lot of these seem to run by pension companies ultimately wanting to give you financial advice. Do watch who is trying to organise it. You will possible get lots of financial advisors after your pension pot.

There is a book you can get giving types of residential courses all over UK and for practically anything you can imagine. I attended several courses at a Hall on the Northants/Leics border - which were great- as both spouses can attend a different course of their own interest, and still share room and meals, etc. I just can't remember the name unfortunately - ooops - will get back when I find it!

My husband's company ran one of these when he was 60 ( a few years ago now) trouble is other halves were expected to attend and I am 9 years younger than him. For two whole days my mind was just screaming (I'm too young for this get me outa here). The content of the course assumed that we were all 60 going on 70 if not 80! I think it would be far better to find a course that is more specific to your interests and hobbies than a general 'retirement' one.

positive I suspect they will all major on finance which is fine if that is what you need but imo it is too late by the time you retire.

I suspect that most of us who have retired have done very different things and a 'one size fits all' type of course might well be largely a waste of time.

Are there specific things you want to learn about?

I would like to learn how to say NO!when I'm asked to do extra work.

I'm now working 4days next week plus preparation time (unpaid) of 2days. That leaves me Friday to pack as I leave on sat morning.
Silver travel adviser have asked me to do blog about my cruise. They have already published one they asked me for on solo travelling with a mobility scooter. They also want to interview me for the radio!
Fame at last!

I got called in to work to do an extra session last week because I couldn't think of a reason not to. Then someone said to me that if it happens again I don't have to have a reason, I can just say 'I'm sorry I can't'. I never thought of doing that. I may have to practice saying it though .
