What misconceptions do you harbour..........

For instance, I always believed that cricket is a summer game confused

But, the children bought DH tickets for the final One Day International against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. He asked me to go with him and I was really looking forward to sitting, doing nothing but enjoying the cricket. Instead, despite wearing two layers plus a cagoule type thing, I sat and shivered all day. sad

What misconceptions have you had?

NfkDumpling Sat 08-Jun-13 22:06:26

My misconception has always been that I'll finish that list of 'To Do' things I set myself each day. My 'Really Must' list is getting out of control.

WHen is the Loughborough Street Fair? I only ask because I am well known for whistling carols all though the year and wouldnt want to find myself persona non grata as a result...

kittylester Sat 08-Jun-13 13:53:20

I laboured under the misconception that that particular 'c' word was banned until after Loughborough Street Fair Brenda. shock It is enough to bring on the screaming abdabs! grin

Movedalot Sat 08-Jun-13 13:11:14

Are you saying its not true?

Stansgran Sat 08-Jun-13 13:05:02

Oh crumbs I still believe it. Wouldn't have it any other way.

Brendawymms Sat 08-Jun-13 12:09:10

The misconception I have is that on the eve of Christmas all the animals in the barn could talk to each other in English. I have carried that for 65 years.!!!!!

Movedalot Sat 08-Jun-13 11:07:55

nightowl my mother had an egg timer with the following on it: "All the world's a little queer, save me and thee and even thee's a little queer". Obviously this was long before 'queer' changed its meaning!

nightowl Sat 08-Jun-13 10:59:25

Thank you movedalot. There are times when it upsets me but mostly I just find it very confusing. Ah well - as they say in Yorkshire, there's nowt so queer as folk.

Movedalot Sat 08-Jun-13 10:41:56

Hope it gets better soon mollie. Hugs to you nightowl

mollie Sat 08-Jun-13 10:39:46

Sorry, no cause for alarm - just a bad morning.

nightowl Sat 08-Jun-13 10:21:59

mollie that's a very poignant post. I empathise completely. I continue to harbour the (apparent) misconception that I was present throughout my children's childhood. Others appear to hold a different view confused

Movedalot Sat 08-Jun-13 10:18:38

Oh Mollie what is the matter? I hope it is just a bad day and nothing worse flowers

mollie Sat 08-Jun-13 10:14:05

That I am visible, or even matter ... sad

Movedalot Sat 08-Jun-13 09:39:48

anno same problem with DH. Yesterday, please get the paper when you go to the shoe menders. Two things to remember at one time but he didn't manage it.

annodomini Sat 08-Jun-13 09:28:46

That DS2 will remember from one minute to the next what I have told him - for example, when I will be out of the country or when I am coming to visit them.

mollie Sat 08-Jun-13 08:29:50

It might not surprise anyone (or it might) that until now I believed that happy couples slept together every night in one bed. Anything else was a bad sign. I think my ideas probably came from the Ladybird book of Happy Families. Having just read yet another article about other people's sleeping arrangements I realise my idea was another misconception. Not sure if I'm happy or sad...

Deedaa Thu 06-Jun-13 20:27:33

We once had a lurcher that stole half a pound of butter and then threw it all up on our bed. I was never able to get the grease stain out of the blanket!

Going back to misconceptions - the biggest one I've harboured is that my combination of scintillating intellect and sheer animal magnetism is irressistable grin

That DS will pass on as requested messages I give him for DDiL, who may not be home when I ring.

I was panic stricken, particularly as it was dark chocolate.
Certainly have never known a dog vomit so much before or since.

HildaW Thu 06-Jun-13 18:37:45

Gosh inthefields....he was lucky, chocolate can be lethal for some dogs.

inthefields Thu 06-Jun-13 18:11:43

I had a mini Schnauzer who consumed an entire box of Black Magic retrieved from a closed cupboard (!) while we were out.

He was sick on and off for 3 days, and it put me off chocolate for a loooong time sad

HildaW Thu 06-Jun-13 17:13:10

Our young dog chewed anything and everything (she's a mix of two different gun dogs so very 'mouthy') We just made sure there were permitted chewing toys that don't look like anything else (daft to buy those that look like shoes etc) all around the house. Yes, it was a bit cluttered for a while but slowly she got used to what she could and could not chew - big raggies and cow hide chews worked best- and nowadays she rarely chews anything she should not.

merlotgran Thu 06-Jun-13 16:01:25

That Peggy, our younger Jack Russell had started to grow up and stop chewing things. The other day she destroyed the bathroom door, having accidentally shut herself in, received a very slight whack on the bottom from my slipper, sulked then had the bright idea of pooing in said slipper. As they were nearly new suede slippers I attempted to wash them. They have shrunk by at least two sizes. hmm

We had a golden retriever, red setter cross some years ago. When he was rescued by us he was 15 months old. We left him to sleep in the kitchen of our Victoian house and because the walls were thick no-one heard anything. Came downstairs the following morning to find he had climbed onto the kitchen units and smashed all the china to the floor. I mean all the china, we had to replace everything.

The next night he was allowed to sleep in a cubby hole outside our bedroom and he became the most perfect, beautiful dog ever; still miss him.

my memory of living in Edinburgh during my childhood is of long hot summers but not much snow in winter but then again that could just be an illusion, perhaps english seasons dont apply here in Scotland,

having lived in Glasgow for very many years there can be quite a lot of difference between weather in east and west
