This would be Petronella Wyatt as in affair with Boris? Well we lesser mortals could all learn a lot from her - personally I love the fact that Ascot etc are going 'down market'

I thought we all had a common parent Adam or Eve.

ninathenana Sat 22-Jun-13 06:56:04

Well actually I have to tell you people my late father was a very distant relative of Lord Wyatt.grin grin

Honestly I kid you not.

I remember white cotton gloves, always had to wear them with best dress and shoes (often a hat too) (cringe) when I went visiting with my mother and grandmother.

It must be your quirky sense of fun drawing you to this thread Absent

absent Fri 21-Jun-13 22:47:01

Enough - I am not actually interested in a) horse racing, b) royal events c) tattoos, d) the egregious Petronella Wyatt or, indeed, e) the comments on this thread. I can't think what I am doing here!

We used to have to wear white gloves as schoolgirls, just to walk in the street. hmm

j08 Fri 21-Jun-13 22:09:08

grin

merlotgran Fri 21-Jun-13 22:07:02

I had to wear white gloves when I went to an air show at Biggin Hill. I got a clip round the ear from my mother when I asked if I was going to direct the traffic in the car park.

Nonu Fri 21-Jun-13 22:02:21

Yeah right , it still is clear as mud .

How frightful to be be Non -U.

Deedaa Fri 21-Jun-13 22:01:09

I remember a lot of shock! horror! at Henley in the 60's when girls were turning up in mini skirts, and then there was the furore in Australia when Jean Shrimpton went to the races in a mini skirt and no tights. Nothing much seems to have changed smile My mother was convinced that it was the end of civilisation as we knew it when Princess Diana was seen at official engagements with bare legs!

j08 Fri 21-Jun-13 21:57:42

She would have just said "Woodrow Wyatt" if he wasn't a sir. She just wanted people to know who she was referring to.That's not snobby. It's sensible.

absent Fri 21-Jun-13 21:54:16

Petronella Wyatt is lamenting the "chavication" of Royal Ascot and changes of which "her friend" the late Queen Mother would not have approved. Then, she does that pathetic show-off thing "My father, Lord Wyatt..." However, I am quite certain that if there hadn't been a lordship to flaunt, she would not have written "My father, Mr Wyatt..." She is writing about things at Ascot being so non-U nowadays (the use of Nancy Mitford's term in my original post was deliberate and ironic) while displaying a remarkable level of snobbery herself that is, of course, socially unacceptable or non-U.

nanaej Fri 21-Jun-13 21:46:05

What have I been doing all my life...I never knew there were such important things to worry about..OMG how can tattoos be allowed in the Royal Enclosure?? I need to read the DM more often to get the real newsgrin

Ana Fri 21-Jun-13 21:43:07

I'm sure absent will clarify matters for you soon, Nonu!
Or possibly not...
Anyway, don't worry about it - I think most of us are non-U these days smile

Nonu Fri 21-Jun-13 21:27:42

Oh God I am sooo none you, I am weeping into my cups .

Perhaps the person who said it was non u could clarify it for me , I am in despair. grin

Will i sleep tonight , with the worry of it all ? Or maybe as I probably still have a little jet-lag it will be cool

j08 Fri 21-Jun-13 21:24:18

She wasn't being snobby when she referred to her father. Just conveying the fact of who she was talking about.

LOL at some of those pictures!!!

Ana Fri 21-Jun-13 21:15:25

It wasn't me wot said it, Nonu....

Nonu Fri 21-Jun-13 20:54:30

Ana , Cheesy grin !!

merlotgran Fri 21-Jun-13 20:52:21

Petronella Wyatt, I mean.

merlotgran Fri 21-Jun-13 20:51:47

I think she has a point.

j08 Fri 21-Jun-13 20:47:37

grin

Ana Fri 21-Jun-13 20:46:30

It's very non-U, don'tyouknow, Nonu! grin

Nonu Fri 21-Jun-13 20:32:45

One cannot deny one"s parentage. What is wrong with saying my father Lord Wyatt ???

absent Fri 21-Jun-13 20:14:23

It's difficult to know where to start with such a boring snob. How very non-U to begin a sentence with "My father, Lord Wyatt..." I can't imagine Nancy Mitford (or the Duchess of Devonshire who gets a mention, although it may not have been the Mitford one) making such a social faux pas. It's rather on the same level as Julian Fellowes.
