We get lots of young pigeons, as janer says, they are just like skinny older ones and try to remedy the 'skinny' bit by stealing all the robin food. angry

Our pigeons nest is so flimsy the eggs fell through and broke on the car roof. They've given up nesting there now as a pair of magpies have moved in. Mr Pigeon is still chasing Mrs Pigeon around the roof tops though.

Deedaa You have a point there! Some do though and obviously make up for the lost. I wonder if anyone else has noticed this - when the pigeons are sitting making that really irritating constant cooing, if you look up at them, they stop - almost as if they were watching you, and can see you looking at them.

PRINTMISS Woodpigeons always seem to build such stupidly flimsy little nests that I doubt if many of their babies survive smile

hmm

j08 Thu 27-Jun-13 14:13:44

No. I can see that.

We inherited the rabbit three years ago when he was about five.

Too late to get him a friend now. Another male and they would fight, a female and they would still fight probably and I wouldn't get any benefit from the baby rabbits because I am a vegetarian smile.

Anyway, I wouldn't want to inflict Basil on a poor lady bunny!

If only they (the pigeons) would do it more quietly! They sound like Sharapova and Azarenka on a bad day grin oops, forgot, not the Wimbledon thread. And as for the poor rabbit.........couldn't someone buy him a little lady friend? (thinkof all the pies.....) grin

j08 Thu 27-Jun-13 12:06:57

Oh no! I couldn't eat pigeon! grin Respect to you though for doing so.

We have loads of wood pigeons, and we do have young ones, they are like skinnier versions of their parents and not such a dark grey. They drive me mad as they cling to the bars of the rabbit hutch and poke their beaks in to steal her food. We have a small wood just beyond the edge of the garden, but they prefer to hunt here. Occasionally we have pigeon pie in revenge for all the veg they steal. (It's a bit like tender kidney without the tang for those who have not tried it, so is excellent with steak)

DH saw the raptor that frequents the fields behind us take a pigeon in flight.
One less to raid my bird feeders ! We have had a dozen of the * things at one time.

j08 Thu 27-Jun-13 09:25:19

You're right PRINTMISS! I have never seen a pigeon feeding a young one as you do with sparrows (not that we've got many of those now sad) and blackbirds.

Very strange.

We see a lot of this in our garden with about four pigeons, but has anyone see young pigeons? You would think with all that going - almost throughout the year, we would see flocks (?) of young pigeons but I have not noticed any. Maybe they are born old and horny?

Petallus! shock Poor bunny. How would you like to bonk a Scrap that!!!

Deedaa Wed 26-Jun-13 21:21:58

I've never yet seen a lady pigeon look the slightest bit impressed by a gentleman, no matter how extravagant his bowing and cooing. smile The most they can manage is a world weary "Oh for God's sake get on with it". I think male pigeons are the Peter Stringfellows of the bird world.

petallus Wed 26-Jun-13 20:12:00

I have a sex mad rabbit in my garden. He hasn't been near a lady rabbit since he left his mother and makes do with his bouncy plastic tunnel.

Stop watching -what are you all - voyeurs? You'll get this thread deleted grin

anno It sounds as if your Collared Doves have been at the cheap Viagra.

feetlebaum Wed 26-Jun-13 19:41:30

The wood pigeon cock here is ever hopeful - but the hen mostly runs away and then flies off, with him in pursuit. I have to agree the collared doves are a model of discreet behaviour - they just like looking pretty.

KatyK Wed 26-Jun-13 19:20:45

We have two as well. They have been here for a while. I can't believe the goings-on and flying feathers, especially when a third one appears and
has to be ssen off.

Nelliemoser Wed 26-Jun-13 19:02:51

The Wood Pigeons in my garden seem to be randy all year round.
The collared doves are far more discrete.

annodomini Wed 26-Jun-13 18:28:59

The collar doves are the most flirtatious in my garden. They even flirt with wood pigeons. grin

j08 Wed 26-Jun-13 18:18:19

I think she is having to fight off two of them!

j08 Wed 26-Jun-13 18:16:56

Well, he is definitely more up for it than she is. I have never seen a pigeon bowing to its ladyfriend like this one's doing! I did n' t know the humble pigeon had a mating display.

I wish they'd get on with it. The sudden flurries keep making me jump.
