The problem with the internet.....

is that it is so seductive. I just looked up the weather forecast for my area and found a link to strange burial grounds and bizarre beaches. Every time anybody posts a link to Youtube, I get sucked in to looking at cute animals and laughing babies. If I see a link to a newspaper article I end up reading the whole paper on line.
I heard on the radio this morning that more information is posted on Youtube in a day than the whole of the BBC's output since it began broadcasting.
Good job I have nothing else to do but read - weather is too bad for a walk.

I have spurts of activity on Twitter. I follow EverydaySexism, Gransnet (of course), Geraldine, several scientific sites and scientists also skeptics (Ben Goldacre for example) and a few political activists. It was interesting to see the action when there was pressure on FB to do something about rape images. People were tweeting about the advertisers they were putting pressure on e.g. Dove and I (an many others) went onto the Dove FB page and asked why they were advertising on FB when FB could not guarantee that their ads would not appear on FB pages glorifying rape.
FB seems to be in retreat - they do not want to spend money I guess on monitoring content - but they certainly don't want to lose big advertiser support.
If I write a blog, I tweet that. Also if I come across some interesting research about something like gut bacteria, I would tweet that.
If you tweet then you will get some followers. Or you can just follow and find out interesting stuff.
If you get only boring tweets from somebody (e.g. it is sunny here in Torquay) then you can un-follow.
It is also good practice at writing succinctly.

Alistair Stewart just tweeted:

A couple of years ago I lent, through @lendwithcare, three hundred quid to three Bosnian women to help rebuild their lives. Now repaid.

I have the same problem as Greatnan too much interesting info out there.

Ella46 my emails from twitter are pretty inconsistent too. On the other hand Facebook sends me daily updates about all sorts of people who I might want to befriend!!

To the vicars? No. Just read their tweets. They have got lovely little dogs. They put pictures up.

mollie Sun 30-Jun-13 20:04:54

Are you locali-ish J08?

j08 Sun 30-Jun-13 19:55:45

Is this tweet a bit sexist?! shock

"Alex Salmond also has some supportive words for Laura Robson, who he says is a "lovely player""

He wouldn't say that about Murray, would he?

j08 Sun 30-Jun-13 19:50:40

He was one of the Communards. He lives with another vicar. (out!)

Not sure how they get away with it tbh. Glad they do though. They are really sweet. smile

I'm always interested in what ex-pop stars/celebs evolve into ... Physicists, astronomers, sex therapists, psychotherapists, clerics... Interesting.

scroll up a bit for the writing

j08 Sun 30-Jun-13 18:37:18

I love this tweet. From one of my favourite Twitterers.

up yours glasto

soop Sun 30-Jun-13 11:21:11

jings Can I have some of what makes you what you are? grin

j08 Sun 30-Jun-13 11:06:25

Well, put Bradley James in then.. hmm

I get "blah have tweets for you" emails in my desktop and Kindle Fire email account. I not got a smart phone either.

Ella46 Sun 30-Jun-13 10:35:58

wisewoman I've had emails from twitter, but they don't seem to be consistent, confused

jings I will put Colin in the search box, but I had have the hots for Arthur blush I'm leaving Colin for you! wink

wisewoman Sun 30-Jun-13 10:27:02

Do you need to have a smart phone - not an ancient pay as you go? I signed up to follow some people but I have to log on to twitter and check them. I thought twitter, like facebook, would email you when people you follow update. Certainly haven't worked up the courage to tweet - and anyway who would be interested in my life - it is very dull. Want to be modern and with it but not quite getting it!

j08 Sat 29-Jun-13 23:06:15

Ella just put Colin Morgan in the search box. Go on - you know you want to! wink

Ella46 Sat 29-Jun-13 22:35:23

Thanks vegas I didn't know I could do that.

susieb755 Sat 29-Jun-13 21:58:52

JO 8 that made me laugh !

vegasmags Sat 29-Jun-13 21:57:49

Perhaps I should add that 2 of my favourites are the author Margaret Atwood and Jay Rayner the food critic.

vegasmags Sat 29-Jun-13 21:53:36

It all depends what you are interested in Ella. Searching for topics with a hashtag will show you all the recent tweets on that subject, and you might find someone interesting to follow that way.

Ella46 Sat 29-Jun-13 21:49:42

So who is good to follow then? I've tried a few people but nobody seems interesting so far.

j08 Sat 29-Jun-13 21:46:16

Sigh! grin

Well, I like it! hmm

Ella46 Sat 29-Jun-13 21:42:33

j08 I think you just proved my point grin

vegasmags Sat 29-Jun-13 21:30:29

I enjoy twitter, although one of the men I follow had a bit of a hissy fit lately, saying that tweeting has all the impact of f....ting in the Grand Canyon. I know what he means {grin]

wisewoman Sat 29-Jun-13 19:36:39

I am hopeless with twitter as well. Signed up but don't really "do" it. As for TED talks, Greatnan, they are fabulous. You will be gone for a long time.
