Squirrels anno ? I bought some crocus bulbs from the garden centre and the blighters dug them up leaving the B+M cheapies behind grr.

Nellie typical Cheshire soil then.

They don't like mine, Nellile. What puzzles me is that a whole load of winter aconites disappeared without trace. Is there some pest that eat them?

Nelliemoser Sat 13-Jul-13 20:02:29

Isn't it strange Snakes head Fritillaries do really well in my slightly acidic sandy soil. What garden centres don't tell you enough about on the plant labels is how hardy the plant are and what sort of soil they prefer.

Heucheras seed themselves all over my garden, and thrive without any help from me - I am not a gardener as such, if it's growing leave it, if it dies dig it out, if it chooses to seed in the garden, thank you. Fortunately we have neighbours who have plants which readily seed!

Nellie touch wood, mine seem fine at the moment, they are in sun/partial shade and if anything the soil is a touch too dry at times. I have a green variety in the front south facing borders which I bought as one plant from the church fete last year. That divided nicely into twelve and although they looked a bit scruffy for a while they are now doing well. Gardening as well as being quite an expensive hobby is really frustrating at times isn't it.

I have some David Austin roses which are quite temperamental although I think that might be down to me over pruning them last year. I can't grow Lily of the Valley for love nor money and Snakes Head Fritilari (sp) doesn't like me much either.

Thank you for the site I did have a quick look I must remember to save it.

Caught a glimpse of them yesterday. grin.

Nelliemoser Sat 13-Jul-13 14:38:34

Anno Can you be sure they are still there? wink.

annodomini Sat 13-Jul-13 13:44:49

Somewhere under the weeds, I have several heucheras, one of them a nice sort of copper colour, called - I think - marmalade. I have had several from Primrose Nursery, on Ringway Road near the Airport. Mind you, Ringway Road is best avoided until they finish the construction of the new tram line.

Nelliemoser Sat 13-Jul-13 13:07:08

Sook I love them but they keep disappearing out of my garden. vine weevil grubs love them but some just seem to curl up and die. Overnight.

Ii have just been Googling the problem and a lot of ohers have the same problem.

I have had dreadful vine weevil problems at times and I am afraid I use vine weevil killer on the pots. Or treat big batches of soil with the wonderful Armillatox. aka Chez moi as Armadillotox

Morning all! well afternoon now... lovely sunny day... just been out to test drive (& buy) a new (to me) car!!

soop Sat 13-Jul-13 12:43:10

Cooler and fresher in bonnie Kintyre. A lively sea. Mountains wearing frilly white cloud-bonnets. smile

Another scorcher! That puts paid to any good intentions of gardening sad but I do have to prepare the annual accounts of the group I am Treasurer of and write my Treasurer's report. It is always a bit nailbiting until I do the final "big sums" and (hopefully) they tally!! Of course they should but you would be amazed at what I find in either the raffle (£1 a strip) or entrance (£2) money boxes - where did that 55p come from or 19p all in coppers??

Good morning I have been catching up with chores while it's still cool. Hounds are flat out on their duvets, I dread it getting too hot as they suffer terribly in the heat. I have to cover them with damp towels to cool them down and walks are confined to early mornings and late evenings.

Nellie I love Heuchera. I have a border of purple Heuchera and ferns. The border is edged with sandstone boulders (one of DHs obsessions put to practical use) grin and I've planted Creeping Jenny to climb over the these. IMO the purple , green and yellow colours look wonderful together. Shame about the rest of the garden blush

I bought my Heuchera from a little nursery on the main road at Irelands cross just past Woore. Home and Bargain also had them for sale last week at £1.49

My batch of Gazpacho is made and cooling. There is nothing like it for this sort of weather. Its no good trying it if the weather is dull and grey as in the last two years. smile sunshine

Grandmanorm Sat 13-Jul-13 10:50:38

Lovely day here also, but the sky is clouding over a wee bit which makes it feel cooler.
Nicoise salad for us this evening.

Nelliemoser Sat 13-Jul-13 09:09:56

I have been been out to water the patio pots and I am trying to get two new Heuchera planted, but the ground is too hard. Its lovely now but I think think I will be hiding indoors later.

This weather is an excuse for making Gazpacho for lunch again.

It's such a lovely morning. My daughter has filled the paddling pool and her toddlers are already in there before the sun starts beating down. How long does this have to last before you start missing a bit of rain? Nah, me neither! grin

Ella46 Sat 13-Jul-13 08:33:40

Morning 'netters', a fresh, bright morning here. I love the cool fresh air when you get up early and open the door and windows downstairs smile

Exercise class this morning I must be mad it's too hot to do much but we do our best wink

Then a leisurely coffee with the 'laydees' while watching the 'wags' parading up and down shock

Enjoy your day everyone sunshine

Lovely morning here too, and set for a HOT (weather-wise!) weekend. Off shopping early to avoid the heat, then a quiet rest of day. Enjoy the children gillybob, they keep you young.
