Don't let your e-reader keep you up at night

A friend was once told to remove all electrical items from the bedroom in order to get a good nights sleep so out went the TV, radio alarm etc. I tried it and it did seem to work and now have only a 'proper' clock rather than the radio alarm and nothing else. Still get the odd night but more due to churning things over.

How do you set your background as vellum and change the text size?

I have kindle, Kobo and classics on my iPad. If I could change the settings for one, would it work for the others?
Must admit I still reach out for a proper book (paper kind) at bedtime!

Interesting comments. I have been having trouble sleeping at night for some time but never associated it with my iPad. Often read ebooks on this with background set at vellum and text quite big. I don't think it is the reading, rather my predisposition to surf the net, go onto twitter and, worst of all, play the addictive Candy Crush Silly Gran!

I do not have a back lit Kindle and tend to reread books I am familiar with at bedtime so, although I do at times have bad nights, I have far fewer than I did five or ten years ago when Kindles didn't exist so I do not think my sleep patterns are affected by reading a Kindle at night

I read fo rabout twenty minutes before the urge to turn out the light hits me. Mostly the Kindle, but occasionally a paper job. It makes no difference which.

Me too Jess, I read with no bedside light. I love reading before I sleep, and often drop off mid paragraph. My kindle and its' little light turn themself off after a few minutes of inactivity from me.

Also I was reading a "real" book in bed the other night, and it is not so easy as you have to hold it at the right angle, keep it open properly and turn the pages - just a click with my kindle is easier. I still have real books, but in bed, prefer kindle.

I would never take laptop or similar to bed though. Not unless I was laid up for a while.

I like my Kindle during the day, but at night a real book is far more relaxing.
I've been reading real books before going to sleep since I was six years old.
Shan't change now. Anyway, anything electronic livens up the brain too much at night, I think.

My kindle with a light in the cover puts me to sleep. It makes it possible to read with the room light turned off, which may counteract the "more light keeps you awake" effect in the article. It also turns itself off if I drop off while reading. What could be better?
Ipads in bed, now, or anything with full internet access, that could be bad.

I think the original, non lit Kindles are OK, but certainly if the tablet is back lit then I am sure it could affect sleep.

I only read on the iPad if I don't have the kindle, but will note what you did, when - thanks.

I've just payed around with the font and screen settings on the book I'm reading on my iPad, and now have a black screen with white font which is as easy to read as the reverse. You just touch the bottom right hand corner with the sunshine symbol and it gives you lots of choices.

Having just read that it, doesn't surprise me at all.

Back to paper and print for us bedtime readers.

That makes sense. I've found it difficult to sleep lately and put it down to the hot weather, but I've been reading books on my iPad, too. I'll stop taking it to bed and see if it makes a difference.

That's interesting gk. I've passed that info. onto Mr. B. grin

I still have 'real' books on my bedside table. smile

Grannyknot I couldn't agree more as I am guilty as charged. The only difference is I have my BlackBerry tablet beside my bed where books uesd to be. I find it hard to sleep so I turn my tablet on for about half an hour and when I turn it off.......... I find it hard to sleep....... Ever decreasing circles I think. hmm

I'm not sure how scientific this study is - but I went a-Googling and found several similar reports since husband claimed that instead of blaming the heat etc etc on my difficulties lately in getting off to sleep, I should consider that perhaps "staring at that Kindle for hours before bedtime is not such a good idea" smile. So this article has given me further food for thought on the subject, and it kinda makes sense.
