Communication skills

I feel I need to improve my communication skills with my eight year old GS. This was this mornings conversation....

Me: James would you please go and see if there are any white clothes in your laundry basket

James: Ok Nana

He returns a few minutes later empty handed

Me: Were there any?

James: Yes Nana, lots.

I give him a quizzical look.

James: I suppose you are going to tell me you want me to bring them down

Me: Derr, yes.....
