A summer place

Today's search in the Old Grey Cells was started by a snatch of the 'Theme from a Summer Place' we heard on the TV. But who made the lush, instrumental recording? Eventually a name popped up from the deepest recesses so off to YouTube and wallowed in the music - brought back so many memories of Summer Holidays as a teenager.

Does anyone else remember the name?

janeainsworth you took me back in time with your mention of American Graffiti! I loved it, the music & the cars. The whole 'cruising' thing was so glamourous to my eyes. Interestingly the town of Modesto, where George Lucas was from and on which the film was based, banned cruising about twenty years ago.

Well I suppose ther is a loose connection..... remember the ice-creams in the intervals? hmm

Oldgreymare Wed 14-Aug-13 23:17:50

Galen selective memory, failed on that bit blush
P.S. No connection I know, but No 1 son and family gave me an ice-cream maker for my birthday..... yippee!

I've just downloaded it on my eReader, Deedah. Looking forward to reading it. smile

I've only just been rereading The Greengage Summer when I've got the folio society edition which has a very interesting introduction by Jane Asher. She talks about how in awe of Susannah York she was, because Susannah was so grown up, and how she fell in love with Kenneth More.

Oh joy! I've found it on a Byrneaholics website!!! Bit worried now as finding it is another one of my raison d'etre's [raison's d'etre??]. Just got to find the time; can't be tonight..still looking out for meteors [there may be a few more if I'm lucky]. When I retire I won't have this problem.can stay up all night watching things [and I shall].

Gabrielle Byrne made a film called 'Reflections' which I'd love to see again; that had beautiful music in it. Can't get it anywhere [annoyingly had it on video once but taped over it; don't think it was even on the tv again].

I remember sneaking underage into The Family Way with Hywell Bennet and Hayley Mills ! my friend and I thought we were so grown up.
A few years before I had been sworn to secrecy by my older cousin (not allowed to the go to cinema as her dad was Bretheren) who had to drag me along to see Summer Holiday with her friends!
And I fell in love with Sergeant Troy in Far from the Madding Crowd!

But a film I really remember being impressed by was Adalen 31 (Bo Widerberg) have never been able to find it on DVD sad. Great music.. almost as good as his previous film Elvira Madigan.

My favourite film was and is "High society"

OGM re Rita, do you remember the 4minutes door to door scene at its sequelae?

janeainsworth Tue 13-Aug-13 20:51:36

Number... I remember my Mum getting up and switching off the telly in the middle of Up the Junction shock

Never saw Peyton Place, lived with my Grandma, she didn`t approve of certain stuff on TV.

Ana Tue 13-Aug-13 17:56:32

Yes, that's the one I was thinking of - Ryan O'Neal was in it too.

Oldgreymare Tue 13-Aug-13 17:26:59

Granny 23 and gma..... oh yes. Thought Troy Donahue was gorgeous, saw the film and spent days thinking I could be like the teenagers in the film.
Number... with you on those films too! Loved Rita Tushingham in 'A Taste of Honey' (Dora Bryan so good too!) perhaps a bit more realistic than'A Summer Place'.
There was series on T.V. with a young Mia Farrow, was that Peyton Place?

Coincidentally Ken Bruce played this theme tune this morning. I remember going to see it (as a wee girl) while on holiday in Lamlash, Isle of Arran at the local village hall. I was too young to understand it and I have never seen it on TV.

Tegan Tue 13-Aug-13 16:22:43

Sorry; just trying to paste something I'd seen [didn't think it would work]!

I loved the film A Summer Place, also the theme music, and absolutely DROOLED over Troy Donahue!
However, the really racy and daring films, to me, were Room at the Top, and Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, so daring that, as a rather sheltered teenager, I didn`t really understand all at the time, found out later!

Ana Tue 13-Aug-13 15:57:16

I'm getting A Summer Place confused with Peyton Place here.....that was on TV, but in the 60s, I think.

whenim64 Tue 13-Aug-13 15:37:02

Greengage, that should say.

whenim64 Tue 13-Aug-13 15:36:12

The Greenage Summer with Kenneth More and Susannah York. I could watch it again and again. I haven't read the book yet - must get hold of it.

janeainsworth Tue 13-Aug-13 15:26:25

Did anyone else love American Graffiti?

dustyangel Tue 13-Aug-13 15:05:06

A Summer Place is one of my favourite bits of music. I loved the book and I think the music conjures up the film and that whole golden summer, American teenage thing. I was in love with The States in my teens as my best friend had just emigrated there.

As a child, all the kids round our area loved the Hayley Mills films - The Parent Trap, Whistle Down the Wind, Pollyanna. All the little girls wanted to be her. Also, all the George Formby films they used to show on a Sunday afternoon, daft but cosy. Later in the 60s, I loved all the so called trendy stuff, Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush, Georgie Girl, Alfie, and some of Elvis's films, Blue Hawaii etc. And as a fanatical Beatles fan, both of their films. blush

gma Tue 13-Aug-13 14:06:02

Still got my copy of A Summer Place, written by Sloan Wilson (available on amazon for Kindle at only £2.99!) which I bought back in the late 50s. Several of us from school went to see the film in 1959 as we were all in love with Troy Donahue!! The film also starred Sandra Dee, Richard Egan and Dorothy McGuire. Cannot recall seeing the film on TV. The music still gives me shivers down my spine. We all thought that the film was quite racy, it may have been an A certificate as pre marital sex was mentioned also contraception!!!!!! blush
Anybody else remember seeing it?
What other films from your youth bring back lovely memories
