Heaven is.....

Eating foie gras whilst listening to the sound of trumpets, according to Sidney Smith. ( I approve of the trumpets but not the foie gras.)
For me this morning, heaven was sitting on a hillside in the sun, surrounded by wild flowers and looking down on my block of flats, about 100' below. I had walked for two hours in the forest behind my home, got nicely lost, as usual, found a logging track and figured it must lead somewhere and emerged onto the hillside. I had a picnic (I always carry one now, having had one episode of feeling faint as my bp dropped through exertion and dehydration). I could very faintly hear the sound of the Matchbox cars crawling on the road below, but the only sounds nearby were cowbells and the hum of insects. There were clouds of butterflies, mainly settling on some flowers that looked like cornflowers, but were lavender.
I have lived here for three years now and loved every minute. If it were not for my wish to be near my daughter in New Zealand, I would stay here until I died, or at least as long as I was able to live independently.

I certainly intended this to be one of the threads we could all enjoy without any sniping. Shall we just forget the diversion and carry on with our pleasant chat?

Feetle - I am not sure if you failed to notice that I began the OP with that quote? Or did I get it wrong in some way?

Walking on a sunny beach, a small hand in each of mine and constant chattering about what is on the beach, in the rock pool, what's for lunch, what makes the sun keep going and why can't a cousin be your brother too!.......

Oh dear - now you have reminded me that my first sight of the coral on my yearly snorkeling holiday puts me in heaven too! And opening a new book - and eating coffee ice cream with cream on top. I guess life is just full of good things.

Putting a £1 on a horse at 80/1 and being there to see it win at the Cheltenham Festival blush. Although in a few weeks time it will be lying on the sofa watching BBC4 into the early hours knowing I haven't got to get up for work the next morning smile. Going back a few years it would have been seeing the children fast asleep in their beds knowing they were safe.

Middle of the night in Bray harbour in Aldeney haveing a last night drink with my late OH on a balmy summer night. Watching the moon drift over the island and admiring the Milky Way!

Galen Wed 14-Aug-13 18:52:15

That's the celestial one, not the confectionary!

JessM Wed 14-Aug-13 19:32:28

Ah galen you have such romantic memories. That's lovely.
For me it is spending time with my grandchildren.

merlotgran Wed 14-Aug-13 19:55:44

Laughing, especially with my 15yr old DGS who is definitely on my wavelength. He helped me in the garden today while his younger brother was fishing with Grandpa. We sat in the shade drinking lemonade shandy and putting the world to rights. Heaven!

Sitting on the sofa this morning with my three cats snuggled next to me purring contentedly, clearly fit, well and forgiving after their three-month separation from us and their long journey to New Zealand.

The first time I held my new born granddaughter came pretty close.

Then there was the day I went with my daughter to choose her wedding dress, and we both dissolved in tears of joy!

And more seriously, the day I was discharged from hospital with an "all clear" from my oncologist. As I walked outside, the leaves on the trees truly looked more green than I had ever noticed, the blue in the sky was incredible, and just sitting in my conservatory, watching birds at the bird table, I had a feeling of peace which could only be described as my idea of heaven!

LizG Wed 14-Aug-13 21:23:42

....walking around Poets' Walk (Cliff Edge and area of natural beauty) with the dog, first thing in the morning. Haven't been able to do this much since my hip op but managed it yesterday smile

Galen Wed 14-Aug-13 21:27:02

Isn't that Clevedon?

LizG Wed 14-Aug-13 21:31:39

Sure is Galen. Then on to the Pill.

Galen Wed 14-Aug-13 21:33:14

Never done it. Only been here 35years, haven't got round to it. Is it disabled (scooter) access able?

LizG Wed 14-Aug-13 21:45:08

Sadly it is very hilly so I have to be feeling 'on top' before attempting it. That's why it was good doing it yesterday.

Galen Wed 14-Aug-13 21:46:30

sad

LizG Wed 14-Aug-13 22:00:47

Nice thread - thank you, Greatnan. I had a lovely moment of happiness this week: my 5 year old granddaughter had painted a picture for me, which her mum took home. This is what the note she gave me the next day said:

"Nanny I rilly mad that pitcher for you so I mad you this speshle pitcher becos I love you so much".

The picture was of a lovely pink heart. I thought my heart would burst!

Gorki Wed 14-Aug-13 22:53:51

That's lovely hummingbird. I can imagine how you felt. What a special note for her to write.

Oldgreymare Wed 14-Aug-13 23:44:55

Arriving at a holiday destination and taking that first breath of 'holiday air'.
DGS, all of 14 and now so lovely to be around, telling me he loves me.
Resting back in gentle sunshine with a warm breeze on a beach, in a flowery meadow, near a stream, in a clearing in a wood so many lovely places!
