Yes, he was only 19 but I can still see him vividly in my minds eye. Finally got to see his grave a few years ago and cried as if it had been yesterday.

That's a memory to cherish Moved

The Wye is the only river I have ever canoed on. Did it with my big brother just before he was killed in a car accident.

finocchio Fri 30-Aug-13 09:56:33

The Wye Valley is very beautiful. Great canoeing to be had there.

finocchio Fri 30-Aug-13 09:54:19

...and there was I thinking you'd enjoy shooting the rapids, J. wink

Not a handbag in sight on the video link. grin

j08 Thu 29-Aug-13 22:12:19

(the kids laughed at me for taking a handbag, but they were very glad to have ice creams afterwards. hmm smile)

j08 Thu 29-Aug-13 22:09:43

It was in the Wye Valley penstemonn.

Nelliemoser I'm very glad to be able to say I did n' t find out the temperature of the water. (phew!)

LizG Thu 29-Aug-13 20:18:18

My thoughts entirely Nfk I used to canoe as a child but if I got in one now it would remain firmly attached to my bum for life smile. Well done J08

Nelliemoser Thu 29-Aug-13 20:02:58

I did some canoeing in the Dordogne about 23 yrs ago. It was great fun. It did help that the water was warmer than most British rivers could ever be.

Aka Thu 29-Aug-13 19:59:31

What a lovely thread. LOL grin

NfkDumpling Thu 29-Aug-13 19:44:58

What's wrong with taking a handbag? i'm sure it was a very outdoorsy natural leather effort not a sparkly clutch bag.
I used to love canoeing - but fear that if I tried it now my bum would get stuck!

Nelliemoser Thu 29-Aug-13 19:44:05

Well done that woman! grin

Anne58 Thu 29-Aug-13 19:34:25

And only in that respect! grin

Ana Thu 29-Aug-13 19:15:01

jingle's like the Queen in that respect...

annodomini Thu 29-Aug-13 19:13:30

Why did you take a handbag on a canoe? Just asking...

j08 Thu 29-Aug-13 19:01:41

Oh yes! And I dropped my handbag in the drink but got it out really quickly. smile

Penstemmon Thu 29-Aug-13 19:01:28

Where were you paddling your canoe?

j08 Thu 29-Aug-13 18:59:26

I'm back.

Tripped on the steps going down to the canoes and nearly went arse over t. The life preserver thingy was too small and came right up to my chin, and felt more like a neck brace. I nearly chickened out when the bloke gave the safety chat which seemed to be mostly, if you capsize just be sure to look after the canoe and don't lose the paddles. I involuntarily said Shite! very loudly on getting into the thing as I landed rather heavily into it and the whole lot seemed to be in danger of going under the water. Then we had a little run in with a pleasure launch who, after sounding off his horn several times had to come to a complete halt while we sorted out how to steer our way out of his path.

Apart from that, it was ok-ish. hmm

In fact I quite enjoyed it, all things considered. smile

I would recommend it to anyone.

sunseeker Thu 29-Aug-13 17:42:50

Its been a long time - hope j08 is OK!

finocchio Thu 29-Aug-13 17:39:38

This is for you j08, and anyone else who wants to watch a great video on canoeing. Used to do it when my sons were youngsters.

Do NOT have your mobile in your pocket - DH did and the canoe overturned - his mobile was never the same!

Stansgran Thu 29-Aug-13 13:28:22

And keep hold of the paddle at all costs

Movedalot Thu 29-Aug-13 13:27:41

River, ocean, pond, moat?
