I have more pairs than I dare to confess to on here.
I am not the only one, all four of us are just as bad. My secret vice is cashmere, I spend hours on ebay buying up cashmere socks to get me through the winter as they are not too bulky but are very warm. Merino wool will do at a pinch (arthritis in my feet) DBH loves Duchamps and Gallo socks, Son aspires to them but will settle for brands like Odsox and luckily the daughter doesn't care as long as they are warm and pretty. I told Son to take two weeks' worth of clothing to university with him. I went through his clothes the other day and he has only taken 8 pairs of pants but 30 pairs of socks. With 20 pairs still in his drawer.
He rebelled at school by his socks, he was meant to wear dark grey, so of course, the brighter the better.
Old wool socks of mine have the toes cut off, are hemmed and become gardening glove extensions, felted ones are pretty good at stopping nettle stings. They also bridge the gap between gloves and 3/4 length sleeves in the winter under a coat and a hole can be cut in the heel part to make long mittens. So I don't feel at all guilty about my addiction, I get full use out of them. The males' socks are good for wearing on the hands to clean venetian blinds and general dusting of small ornaments.
