At my first infant school (1966), at assembly every morning we would have to show that we had a handkerchief with us. If anyone didn't, they were given one for the day which had to be returned within a few days, laundered and ironed ready for its next user.
Regarding the returning of pop bottles, I remember that over one weekend a little group of enterprising youngsters made quite a bit of money. They took no end of bottles back to the local supermarket. It took a while for the staff to notice that the empty bottles that they were putting outside at the back of the shop, ready to be collected, were being brought straight back in at the front door by the kids, eager to collect the return money.
