Any piano teachers out there?

PS if Michael Gove is happy for non-qualified teachers to work in Free Schools......

I am teaching my grandson the piano. I think you would need to produce a CRB certificate, be upfront about your lack if teaching qualifications and teaching experience, and undercut the going rate.

Take it from there and see how it goes.

My DD taught young children while she worked towards her Grade 8 but then went on to become ARCM. Her own piano teacher had 50 years experience and was a choir master in a Minster.

You could take your diploma, after your grade 8. That would give you enough credibility. My son took his (aged 18) a few months ago. You need a good teacher yourself, though, to pass.

Most children who begin music lessons fall by the wayside. I wouldn't think you would need a degree for beginner lessons, much more important to be patient and nice. Also, older beginners and returners might want the same rather than a string of qualifications.

Just looking for some advice. I play piano as a hobby and love it. As I'm looking for career options at the moment I was thinking of perhaps doing some private teaching. My problem is that I don't have much in the way of formal music qualifications. I posted on mumsnet a while back and received a proper dressing down, but since then I have taken a qualification through the abrsm, and I'm working towards Grade 8 piano. I feel slightly better qualified than I was a year ago, but am I still deluding myself?

I know of people teaching music without qualifications, but I wouldn't attempt it without at least some credibility. And I am well aware that many (if not most) teachers have degrees.

Any thoughts?
