Stansgran I think the film you refer to is Spring and Port Wine – that one certainly featured a herring. The paterfamilias wasn't John Mills, but James Mason. It also had lots of young actors who later became very well-known – Rodney Bewes, Hannah Gordon, Susan George.

There are not many actors I really like but Hayley Mills is one and Maureen O'Sullivan is the other.

I liked the film 'The Family Way' with Hayley Mills, Hywel Bennett, John Mills and Wilfred Pickles.

I went off her after that though as I thought Jane Asher was more cool.

I've been trying to remember the name of a film and the actors. This has reminded me. I think it was john mills in a rather"gritty"northern film. He was a stern paterfamilias who treated himself to an expensive overcoat(Crombie) while the family handed over their wages to him. One daughter couldn't eat the kipper? Herrings ? For tea and he insisted they were dished up to her again. Turns out she was pregnant but un married and I think he went benevolent at the end. Please does anyone remember it?

I loved Whistle Down the Wind, oh and it made me cry, still does. I wanted to be Hayley Mills as well.........aah happy days.

She seems to have led such a well balanced life [for a child star, that is] but then, no wonder coming from such a well balanced family. Stopped acting to raise her children. I loved her sons band, Kula Shaker.

All the kids in our area loved Hayley Mills. I just wanted to BE her. The boy in the street who everyone fancied was mad about her which made it worse! Her life (in films obviously) couldn't have been more different to mine.

Whistle Down the Wind was also my favourite of Hayley Mills' films - the music is wonderful.

My GM's favourite book as a child was Wide Wide World [she was born in 1897] I have her copy still - also Froggy's Little Brother, I have that copy too. Youngsters would find them very difficult to read these days.

I don't know about the songs of your youth - they wouldn't be the same as mine... "Two Brothers", "Gloomy Sunday" come to mind.

Deedaa - I also loved all those death songs in my early teens, must have fitted in with the drama of suddenly growing 4 " over the summer holidays at 13 and by september finding myself head and shoulders taller than the other girls. The boys of course didn't reach my shoulders. Tiggyprio - Whitby is one of my all time favourites, and it's definitely developed an alternative type feel. As well as goths, frankenstein and the old town hippy feel, there are a number of weekend festivals, including a Star Wars convention. If you do fancy being a goth Deedaa go to Whitby (North Yorkshire coast) on one of their 'Goth Weekends' (or weeks?). There are goths there of all ages !!

I loved the chandelier at the start of the film and, in fact my son bought me a 'rainbow maker' for the kitchen a couple of Christmas's ago. Also loved the films with Kevin Corcoran that Walt Disney made round about that time as well, and there was another young actor that I had a huge crush on [need to google it now]. Think he was in Swiss Family Robinson.

I loved that film and the first record I ever had was from another film with Hayley Mills. It was called Lets Get together and the film was The Parent Trap and Hayley Mills sang it. Oh does anyone remember the song Jonny Remember Me by John Leighton? I had that record about the same time, early sixties I think. Gosh this is taking me back......was it really so long ago

When working, we'd often comment that someone was going Pollyanna, if they had a more positive view of a situation than the majority. Didn't mean they were wrong - often!

This happens to me all the time! I had a visitor this afternoon who said he had bumped into one of my neighbours he had worked with some time ago but couldn't remember his name and asked me what it was. He described him (even described his dog) and I couldn't for the life of me remember the name either - and he only lives two doors down from me!!!
