I started to make some flapjack this morning. Butter melting, sugar weighed, nuts and seeds ground, tin lined with baking parchment, oven heating up...

...no oats

all is on hold.

Thanks for that janeainsworth, I can now reliably inform my non-believers that it is a scientific fact sleep can be disturbed by the full moon, and nothing at all to do with me being a witch. (won't be able to quote any figures, can't remember those). It is also interesting to know that other people have similar problems, I wonder too of they are inclined to be a little 'psychic'?

JessM Wed 06-Nov-13 13:47:31

I had one who was ruled by the "I've booked the whole morning for the meeting and I know how to make it last" rule hmm

glassortwo Wed 06-Nov-13 13:37:43

I had a boss who was ruled by the Moon, we all had to keep our heads down on a full moon, he would rant and rave. Whenever he started we always looked to see where the moon was.

yogagran Wed 06-Nov-13 13:35:27

My DD has sometimes said that her DC don't sleep so well at full moon times and their behaviour can be more erratic too. I always "poo-pooed" the idea but perhaps there's some truth in it

We used to stay at a farmhouse B&B in Ireland. One year she had an extension built that had new beds. Neither I not the S.O. slept a wink; it was like trying to sleep on a plank of wood. I always regret not mentioning it to the owner, but we were so fond of her we didn't want to upset her [her cooked breakfasts with home made soda bread and eggs from her farm were to die for].

Speaking as an ex guest house owner, Kitty, have you ever thought through the logistics of having mattresses/beds to suit each guest, from 7 to 20+stone and five foot tall to six foot six?
How many mattresses have you bought for your own home which seemed okay in the shop but became uncomfortable after a year's use?

AlieOxon Wed 06-Nov-13 10:22:49

I caught up on sleep last night.
Was it the moon for the last week? Or was it worry about my neighbours - I can now relax. Maybe both!

I do know that the moon comes in my window and makes me think it's getting light sometimes.
I imagine that stone age people might have reason to be wakeful on bright nights, predators could be around!

Tegan Wed 06-Nov-13 09:59:23

I often log on in the early hours; will look out for you, Nellie!

Nelliemoser Wed 06-Nov-13 09:56:49

On my tablet I have this geekish airplane tracking app "flightradar24". You can follow planes all over the world and watch a simulation of their flight path as they come into land. Good mindless stuff for 4am.

kittylester Wed 06-Nov-13 09:54:35

I have sympathy for all you bad sleepers. I am quite often awake at 3.30 am but bed in our hotel is soooooooooo uncomfortable that I hardly slept at all. Do hotel owners never try their own rooms out before they let them? angry

Off home today but keeping an eye on developments along the way.

janeainsworth Wed 06-Nov-13 09:50:23

Printmiss It's interesting that you should say that about the full moon.
I usually sleep quite well, but often when I don't there seems to be a full moon.
It appears there is some evidence to support the idea.

Count your blessings anno .
I had a second non-great night. But slept to a reasonable hour. Found the mature student doing a neat copy of maths assignment in his dressing gown. Pointed out this amazing website that works out really hard calculus problems for you. How on earth are lecturers supposed to teach and assess with all these ways of cheating.... I suppose the truth will out when they do supervised assessments and exams. He, however , has done his the hard way. Ah-hum darling, don't you have a 9 o'clock lecture...
Meanwhile I need to wake up and finish writing a job description.

Marelli Wed 06-Nov-13 09:36:38

Nelliemoser, I share your shoulder problems and after my Right shoulder/upper arm 'seized' and went into spasm yesterday afternoon, lasting all evening, it made me so miserable I wept with frustration. Lay with hot water bottle against it in bed but it made no difference. Got up, had more painkillers and knew nothing else until 7.15am. GP appointment made for this morning. I think sitting here, laptop on knee and constantly refreshing during the day hasn't helped - typed with Left hand last night.....(gobbledegook!)

Tegan Wed 06-Nov-13 09:34:26

When I can't sleep I start channel hopping and often seem to end up watching embarrassing bodies; it seems to be on on a 24 hour loop [along with Flog It].

annodomini Wed 06-Nov-13 09:25:16

I feel almost guilty for being a good sleeper. I think it's an escape mechanism. I dread logging on to the laptop every morning. But this is a thread for insignificant posts. I'm seeing GD1 for lunch today. She came up to Manchester to be witness in the trial of a man who was violent against one of her housemates, but he pleaded guilty, so she has time to spare.

Gally Wed 06-Nov-13 08:41:49

Grannylin I did the same only I was watching Above Suspicion (sp). First natural night's sleep I have had in weeks........ May do it again tonight, wonder what's on? grin

Grannylin Wed 06-Nov-13 08:36:41

I knew I wouldn't sleep so stayed up late and started to watch Masters of sex on Ch4+. It was so boring I gave up and slept like a log til 8am..recommend it grin

Found the specs! They were caught up in the curtain behind the settee, no idea how they got there, but pleased that I now have them. Must have been a funny old night last night, I usually sleep well, but had to get up to get a drink. It's usually a full moon thing with me, not sure if there was one last night.

alternativegran Wed 06-Nov-13 07:59:17

Thank you Jenduram

Didn't realise that some key locators worked by whistling, sadly out for me. the ones I have seen advertised in the past either had a remote control or you could use the tag on one object to locate another.

What I want to know is do they have a loud enough bleep and do the batteries last. Can usually find my mobile phone by calling it from the land line but even that fails if it is behind a cushion or mixed up in bed clothes As for glasses I have extra pairs of very cheap reading ones in addition to the pair that should be on a cord around my neck.

Oldgreymare Wed 06-Nov-13 07:47:58

Me too when. Really must do SOMETHING today, of all people, Carol would not sink into this malaise.
Right.... here I go!
flowers and sunshine and all else that is positive to one and all.

whenim64 Wed 06-Nov-13 05:59:31

How come I can nap in my armchair, but not in a warm bed? I know if I get up and make a cup of tea, I'll fall asleep before I drink it! Looks like I might as well give up and go and do something instead of counting the minutes. Hope there is news of Carol today.

whenim64 Wed 06-Nov-13 04:35:59

Busy round here, isn't it? I woke up a while back and am waiting to get sleeoy again. I can't remember when I last had such disturbed sleep - probably when the childen were newborn over 30 years ago. I've downloaded a couple of libary books and have started reading Donal McIntyre's autobiography - a self-confessed flanneler if ever there was one. Interesting so far, though. I'll get my head down in a few minutes in the hope that I can get another hour. Back later.

Nelliemoser Wed 06-Nov-13 04:05:17

Hello other non sleepers . its surprising how many do drop in at odd hours of the night. TGF gransnet. I must try the serious relaxation stuff. Nowt else is working. Nothing to eat in Soops kitchen either. I shall refill my hot water bottle and try again.

petallus Wed 06-Nov-13 03:13:26

Just so you know you are not alone, I'm wide awake at the moment. I'm going to give myself half an hour and then settle down to some deep breathing and relaxation. I read somewhere that can be almost as restful as sleep.
