A four line poem

When I was feeling sad and low
And couldn't think of where to go
For help and comfort with my plight
I came upon this lovely site

Where nans (and also grandads too)
Help each other to get through
The ups and downs of family strife
And all those problems that is life

It really helped for me to share
My worries with those who seemed to care
And not just problems and worries here
Giggles and laughs and lots of cheer

Oh haven't I said the site's name yet?
I think you've guessed it's called Gransnet.

I'm glad I'm not young
I like being old,
but my hair's getting thin
and my hands are cold.

I see in the mirror
my grandmother's face
and if noone's looking
I'm quite a disgrace.

My grandchildren think
I'm a hundred or two,
I walked with the dinosaurs
and Queen Bess too.

Can't do technology
or open the bleach,
I seem to be shrinking,
too much out of reach

like climbing a mountain
or learning Aztec,
though welcoming still,
little arms round my neck.

So count your blessings, it could be worse,
And send us please another verse,
To tell us of the special things
That just for you, contentment brings.

Oh what a joy is getting old
We've got it made, or so I'm told
Our kindly ministers bestow
All sorts of free gifts, as we know.

Two hundred pounds to spend on fuel,
And though the price is very cruel,
We only heat one room a day
And from its warmth we need not stray.

I hope I last as long to see,
A licence free for my T.V.
I've had my pass to go on buses,
It's such a shame my house none passes!

So never mind the aches and pains,
Just concentrate on all the gains.
There must be some, it's not all rotten,
But what they are I've plain forgotten!

I am sorry, I meant * Grannyactivist* In my defence, I was rushing to get out of the house in time to catch a bus at 9.19, and not be late yet again for a lecture at Surgeon's Hall (number four in a series of five)

This one, very relevantly for the date, was on how the experiences of army surgeons in wars from the Middle Ages up to the present day have contributed to knowledge of the workings of the body and the effects of severe trauma, and the development of new techniques in surgery, anaesthesia and the control of sepsis.

The good news is that "lessons have been learnt" from the sufferings of the wounded. The bad news is that weaponry continued and still continues to play leapfrog with the ability to deal with the results of its use.

We paused to observe 2 minutes of silence at 11 am, and I passed around a copy of Grannyactivists poem.

I'm not sure a separate Poetry forum would work. Poems tend to pop up in places where they are appropriate. They can be poignant, funny, sad, controversial or just plain daft. I'd rather read or write them in context than see a poem languishing in splendid isolation because no one has noticed it.

I think your Grandad poems are truly wonderful

When I wrote my 'Grandad's got an ipod' poem, I thought I would love to suggest a poetry thread on GN but was afraid of being thought of as daft. Glad newist was brave enough. (Not that I think mine is wonderful but what a lovely thread it has proved to be).
