Soutra you sound exhausted. Christmas shouldn't be about running yourself into the ground, though I can see that if families get together there has to be a certain amount of work involved. Would it really matter if you didn't iron all that bed linen? Or is that heresy?

Next time Soutra try using a top sheet. Then you don't need to change the duvet cover.

I'll slip away again now, I only called in to drop off some immaculate cup cakes passed to me by DD2. Her SiL bakes - but doesn't eat. Just gives perfect cakes to everyone in abundance. (I think I can actually say I am completely fooded out. Can't even face a chocolate brazil.) Do help yourselves to one or several.

Soutra, I hope you had a good night's sleep and feel a bit on the better side this morning. The top sheet idea from Nfk is a good one. I confess, I don't iron bedding. I do what my mother did, give it a good shake, lie it flat on the table, and fold it, smoothing each layer as I go. I have been known to iron a pillow case, but not every time. I know, lazy but it's the life's too short to stuff a mushroom approach on the ironing front.
I did the turkey yesterday, at the same time as making soup, sweeping the kitchen floor, tidying everywhere and changing the bed. Mr Iam was busy practicing his music. That isn't to say he doesn't contribute, but Soutra's post about the turkey stripping did resonate.

Yes duvet covers are brutes aren't they, take a lot of handling and drying. Hope you feel better today soutra - and hope that you have planned a couple of days with your feet up reading a good book.
It feels a bit no-man-s-landish this week. Just when I am more than ready to get back to work, the working world is on hold for, effectively, another week.

I use a top sheet so that I don't have to change duvet covers so often. With arthritic shoulders, changing a duvet cover is about the worst task to undertake.

Call me bone idle but I iron as little as possible. My mother had a full time job, a day off a fortnight and still ironed bra straps and knickers. Life is too short.

Anno, I do agree. I'm so relieved that the new medication has reduced the pain and lack of movement in my shoulders. I'd forgotten that until very recently, I had to get Mr Iam to change the bedding, shake out the duvet covers etc. Thank heavens for modern medicine, which means my arthritic shoulders aren't deteriorating too quickly currently. I do sympathise, shoulder pain and weakness makes every day tasks so much harder. I found mine woke me so often at night, even a slight movement seemed to set them off. Hope you are sleeping!

Thanks, Iam. Luckily for me I am a champion sleeper and don't move around much, so am rarely awoken by pain. If I have to get up to the loo, I usually go straight back to sleep, or put the radio on and let it bore me back to sleep!

Another sad bed-linen ironer here.
I don't mind duvet covers so much as fitted sheets.
They drive me up the wall.
I am still debating whether the advantage of them being much more difficult to displace while you're in bed, thus making bed-making easier, is outweighed by the frustration of trying to fold them neatly.
soutra been there, done that, not at Christmas but when DS and family came to stay from the States + DD and family, summer 2012. I was so looking forward to it but seemed to spend the whole time cooking, shopping, and managing the laundry, very little time to rnjoy the family.
What are we like?

Jane I once knew someone who always ironed fitted sheets after they were on the bed - she said it was the only way to get them right.

I don't iron them at all. I fold them in four with the four corners tucked inside each other and flattened, then fold down the edges that are next to the corners (IYSWIM). That makes only one bunched-up area, which is not as difficult to fold into a reasonable size for storing.

If you always iron them, though, I can't see you changing now.

Thank you all!! Apologies for sounding off like that but sometimes you just have to don't you? I think I am "emotionally" tired (as opposed to "tired and emotional" ) and am looking forward to a feet up day tomorrow before we head off down to Bournemouth for the BSO Gala New Year's Day concert. A nght in a hotel then off to "Crinkly Bottom" to stay wth DD, SIL and little boys for a couple of nights at their weekend cottage.
However, soop's sofa is not for grumbling on so where is the coffee and shortbread?

Such a lot to catch up with. A few of our Granspals are going through a tough time right now. Soutra I can feel your frustration. You deserve better.

I did text bags last night. She had been shooting archery arrows at a tournament. She appeared to be pleased with her performance.

It is calm in Kintyre. McSporran is in Tarbert, doing the shopping. I've been ironing a mountain of stuff...including sheets.

Rory is sitting at my feet. He sends purrs to his many fans. If only you could see him as we drink our early morning tea in bed. He sits between us. We take it in turns to pamper him. He purrs loudly...and nudges us when we take a break to drink tea. He is wonderful. What's more, he knows it.

Hello all, I'm donating some delicious lemon drizzle pudding and homemade W/trose custard for anyone who fancies some.

I'm moving very slowly today after having ds and family for a meal last evening. Intense activity with the dgc involves such a lot of up and downing, on the floor or the sofa, and my knees just can't keep up!

Still haven't done the washing up ........................or any ironing...............

It's a lovely denim colour and I recently got two pillowcases the same colour - but there don't seem to be any flat sheets there the same.

Waiting here for washing machine still....I nearly wrote 'wishing machine' - now there's a thought.

Soutra you made me laugh with your description of DH and the turkey. My Dh gets so stressed out when it comes to carving and, of course, I can't do it, it's men's work! (Actually, I couldn't do it) He can get quite snippy with me when he needs to sharpen his knives if there are not acres of work surface available for him.

I would hate to sleep with a top sheet so I continue to iron duvet covers. I quarter then then iron the top of the resulting oblong, then the bottom oblong and hope the middle bits get done in the process. Then we have a throw over the bottom half and cushions at the top. Lazy - me - perish the thought!
