I do think there's a slight irony that the author concludes his article with this
"So, stop competing with your "friends", showing off and shamelessly seeking attention. Close down your Facebook account, get out there, live your life and remember how to have a REALLY good time with REAL people"

and immediately below the article we see this:
"Follow Leigh Clark on Twitter: www.twitter.com/culturine"

If tweeting isn't attention-seeking I don't know what is!

That may be an intentional irony... possibly... hmm

There's an easy remedy if you don't like all those things (pardon the pun.)

Just don't accept the friend requests, block/unfriend people who annoy you, stop the notifications, keep your page private except for the real people, chosen by you!

annodomini Thu 05-Dec-13 14:38:15

Exactly, Lona. I kept getting requests from a person I knew and couldn't stand. He had 1500 'friends'. I wonder how many of them even knew who he was.

I keep getting requests from some Asian guy, I have no idea who he is.

Also agree Lona I keep my FB friends quite exclusive and ignore most requests.

On Skype too.................I have had a few American men in army 'fatigues', coming up on my page " Well, hi there, how ya doin' today?"

blush get thee behind me........... blush

They soon get deleted too!

They are a complete nuisance, and I just think they get into Facebook and Skype through friends of friends, because both these on my computer are tuned in for friends and family only. One particular family member has family in America, and I think that is where the American calls keep coming from. She is constantly on Facebook telling everyone where she is and what she is doing. I am seriously considering cutting her off. I just share bowls information with bowls friends, and the occasional conversation with someone else on Skype.

Hands off. I saw the yanks first, lol.

Bellasnana Thu 05-Dec-13 17:53:18

Except they are not really yanks but Nigerians trying to scam gullible women into parting with their cash!

I'm pretty new to Facebook but none of that rings any bells at all. Maybe that's because my "friends" are friends.
