Cinnamon sticks

I tried a licorice stick a couple of years ago and couldn't believe I used to actually enjoy them.

I remember one day at school, a few of us bought them, but one particular girl bought a few and actually finished them. It wasn't until we were back in class that they took effect!!! As you see, I have never forgotten that 'outcome'

Going back to your point about kipper smells, Nonu, if you put the kippers or kipper fillets into a large lidded shallow saucepan/saute pan, pour freshly boiled water over to cover, put the lid on tightly and just leave for 7 minutes - do not cook further - they will be perfectly cooked and there is not the breath of an odour anywhere.

Yes that seems to ring a distant bell "Spanish Root" it was just as I remembered it, I had long stringy bits after chewing it for a while

Oh yes! And it went a sort of yellow colour when you'd chewed it a bit? There was a very hard licorice too, in little sticks...

I remember liquorice root - we called it 'Spanish Root'...

I love the smell of any cake cooking, but Chrsitmas cake, with all the fruit and spices and alcohol is the very best.

I do have some cinnamon leaf oil which, used judiciously, has the same sort of effect. Better than those dreadful "Christmas" candles any day.

I recently bought some liquorice root, just to see if it is as good as I remember. It is.

Small bundles of cinnamon sticks provide an extra Christmassy aroma in a spicy pot pourri. (Spicy as in vanilla, pine, etc. not as in curry.)

Think INFUSE would be a better idea than diffuse!

We used to buy and chew cinnamon sticks on the way to school. In the 'good old days'.

Try diffusing a chopped cinnamon stick in hot apple juice. Lovely drink on a cold day! Just as good with ginger or star anise instead of the cinnamon. Much cheaper to do it yourself than pay a lot in a well known coffee chain!

I know what you mean my chap is rather partial to kippers it stems from his childhood days on Isle of Man when his family had their own "smokie" so guess what was on the menu constantly ?

You are so right they give out a fab aroma don't they,when I was selling new houses the powers that be had instructions to all sales developments to add them to the mulled wine which we had on offer in the show homes to give it that welcoming feeling.Your house must smell yummy with the cinnermon sticks and the Yankee candles,I've got sprouts on the stove so the aroma here is something to be desired at present.
