Too evening. It's been a busy day. Last night spent with good friends. Sister and BiL too. Got to bed about 2am. Had to prepare lunch for cousin's visit. Late afternoon all three of us collapsed in a heap! Tomorrow, hopefully relaxing.

Hello there.
I went out for milk. The two supermarkets here seem to have cooperated, one open Xmas, the other today, otherwise open other days, how sensible.

Got milk, got wet. I will have to go back and take back some chicken pieces which aren't very good, not off, just taste...OLD. No taste. Cooked two yesterday, ate one...no.

A blank day. My daughter is still in bed and intends to slob around for the day, as she has to go back to work tomorrow. I'm still sleepy after the late night party, may sleep this afternoon if I can't find anything better to do....
It's a NEW YEAR, anyway.

What a horrible cold wet day for the first day of 2014. We have friends staying over for New Year period and have just finished breakfast with them at 1.30 pm, so suppose it's a brunch. Think this is the latest we have surfaced for a long time.

Happy New Year fellow gransnetters.

Happy New Year from a blustery, rainy north west. It's horrible frankly. Just showered two very muddy, hairy dogs after a 45 minute walk, during which I was very thankful I invested in proper wet weather gear a few years ago. Just enjoyed bacon and eggs, and a pot of tea, delicious. A quick tidy up, and off to relatives for their afternoon and early evening do. It'll be lovely to see everyone, but I'll be so pleased to snuggle down on the sofa early evening, and doze off whilst reading my book.

Happy New Year from a very wet and windy N. Devon.
I'm in the happy position of daughter and friend taking over the menu and cooking tonight! It's so lovely not to have to plan what we're having and even more lovely having her still here after over a week.
Big hugs to all those not so happy today and hopes for a brighter future.

Lona no it's a Good food channel recipe - marked "easy" and it was. Hope it tastes Ok! I rarely use my cookery books these days as it's so easy to google them.

The heavy rain continues and we now have a pond on the shingle drive - it's growing too. Fortunately DD only lives 1 mile away so the days of worrying about them on the motorways in bad weather have gone - thankfully. DS and family are with friends in Worcestershire over New Year so I canl postpone my worrying till they are driving home at the weekend!

Anne58 Wed 01-Jan-14 13:24:54

Make a slit in them, bung in some soft cheese, wrap a rasher of bacon round them then oven bake.

Galen Wed 01-Jan-14 13:13:12

Horrible here.
I'm trying to think of something different and non fattening to do with the two chicken quarters I have left in my fridge. They're not cooked. Fed up of chaseur, au vin, curry, CBA to bone them out. Probably just roast them and have them cold.

Anne58 Wed 01-Jan-14 13:09:13

Filthy, foul & depressing here.

Lona Wed 01-Jan-14 13:03:54

Gagagran Is that the Jamie Oliver pie? My ds makes it and it's very tasty!

Gagagran Wed 01-Jan-14 12:54:03

Chucking it down here on the Hampshire coast. All set up ready for DD, DSiL and 2 DGC coming for late lunch at 3pm. Last hurrah of the festive season. I have made a chicken and leek filo pie which looks very good. DD is a keen cook so I am always encouraged to try a new recipe for her visits!

Wish you were nearer ps - you would be welcome to join us. I am sorry that you are feeling so sad and lonely. Keep logged onto GN - you will feel the warmth and goodwill coming over the internet.

Happy New Year to everyone especially those feeling so alone and sad. winecheers

sunseeker Wed 01-Jan-14 12:08:38

Happy New Year to everyone. Especially those who spent Christmas alone but Lona is right, there are always our GN friends.

Chucking it down here in south west, there is a huge puddle outside my door right next to the wood store - I think I will have to dig out wellies to get the logs in.

ps Hope the coming year is the one where your life starts to improve. I know how difficult it can be when you are alone but there is life out there and you have to push yourself to join it (something I am very bad at!), but this year I am determined to make an effort - we can compare notes!!

harrigran Wed 01-Jan-14 12:07:47

Afternoon here, Happy New Year. Grey and dismal in the north east with heavy rain on the way.
ps don't feel alone, there is always someone on here to chat to smile

Lona Wed 01-Jan-14 11:57:21

ps You are NOT alone, we are here, we are your friends. You aren't the only one feeling down, and we will get through it and survive!

I thought you'd said it was 'picking up' and looked out of the window for that patch of blue sky sad.

kittylester Wed 01-Jan-14 11:47:54

Just come back to let you know that it's pickling it down here.

Big (((hugs)) ps. Keep in touch with GN. I hope 2014 is kinder to you. flowers

Tegan Wed 01-Jan-14 11:43:58

Grey and dreary here. Hug winging it's way to you ps.

Thistledoo Wed 01-Jan-14 11:40:37

Happy new year to all Gransnetters, hope 2014 will be a good year for all.
Its a beautiful day here in Inverness-shire, sun is shining and its mild. Seems a bit odd really, could this be the calm before another storm.
To Mick, I always wondered where Brackley was and what kind of a place it was, well now I know. Saw it on the Antiques Road Trip the other day, it looks such a charming place, I think I'll come and live there too.
Off to DS and DIL for lunch, I have made a sherry trifle with chocolate buttons on the top. DGK have little separate puds without the sherry.
PS sorry you are feeling so isolated, sending you loving thoughts, keep posting, there is always someone to talk to on Gransnet. flowers

ps Wed 01-Jan-14 11:28:28

Wet, grey and miserable here in the North West. Nothing changed.
Feeling isolated, lonely and afraid of what the new year will bring (have not seen or spoken to anyone since christmas eve other than 2 phone calls). What a complete contrast to the previous 60 odd years - never mind, onward and hopefully upward.
Have a healthy and prosperous new year.

dustyangel Wed 01-Jan-14 11:17:04

Good morning and a very happy, healthy New Year to all.
BOA ANO NOVO

sunshine for all who need it. Not that there's any here. It is grey again, a lot of very wet drizzle last night but it seems to have stopped now.

We celebrated in more style than usual this year.
I discovered that the charming Portuguese custom of eating 12 raisins on the strokes of midnight is MUCH harder than it looks, it's supposed to bring you luck in the coming months and you are supposed to make a wish with each one. Hard to wish and chew at the same time, let alone kiss your nearest and dearest and drink champagne as well. grin

I think a quiet day is called for. We might see if there are any tickets left for a Strauss concert this afternoon. Then again we might not.

LizG Wed 01-Jan-14 10:37:34

(((hugs))) Lona and to all who need them today.

Here we are at 10.35 and I am starting off the year as I would like to go on - in bed smile. it is miserable, wet and windy and even the dog won't poke her nose outside the door.

gratefulgran54 Wed 01-Jan-14 10:33:28

Morning all, and Happy New Year!

Wet and wild in Mid Sussex today, surprise, surprise!

Hoping it relents a little so I can get out into garden for some pruning/tidying later on, but, if not, it will be another day of fiddling about indoors and watching David Attenborough on the tellybox. 'Twas Natures Great Events yesterday, and is Frozen Planet today.

Will also make a coffee and walnut cake for tomorrow when I go to visit an old neighbour for cuppa and catch-up.

Have a good day everyone smile

Happy New Year everyone! Horrible weather this morning! What will we do today? Still got 11 people milling about the house.....eating incessantly! Love them though but looking forward to having a bit of peace and quiet again after tomorrow? Exhausted.

bikergran Wed 01-Jan-14 10:02:14

Lona Wed 01-Jan-14 09:51:17

Happy new year to you all.
The outlook for my family is not particularly hopeful, so my smile is painted on today.

The weather is so gloomy, dark and wet............we need sunshine

Sorry to be a misery.
