I need help typing

I am so rubbish at typing, I use the two finger method. Until I bought a computer I had never used a keyboard. I did try the BBCs school programs ages ago, for very young children, but my fingers got all tangled up. I have tried, under instruction, over the phone to place my digits where they should go, but I do not seem to have enough to go every where. Can any one please advise because by the time I type my post, I am about twenty minutes behind everyone else blush

Pogs I struggle with the bit where you sort of give a name to the link that you would like to post, so I just highlight it in the bar at the top left hand side, then press the Ctrl key at the bottom left on your keyboard, and press the "C" key at the same time.

The put your cursor where you want to paste the link, then press the CTRL key again, but this time press the "V" key at the same time. (No, I don't know why it's V either, C for copy makes sense, so you would think it would be P for print, but no, it's V)

When you have done that, and a line of what looks like gobbledegook appears in black, like this: http://www.gransnet.com/forums/chat/1203942-I-need-help-typing?pg=2

scroll down a little bit and under the box where you have been typing your message you will see a little box with "Convert links automatically" next to it. Put your cursor in the box and click. That should then make the gobbledegook bit turn blue.

You are very kind but I really am a dummy and it is still as clear as mud. confused

I will ask my daughter to read your post and she will advise me. Thanks.

Talking of keyboards, don't you think that it's a bit odd that the arrangement of the number keys on the right hand side of the keyboard is the opposite to that on a phone? (Apart from the middle row) ?

I touch type on the PC but find it virtually impossible in the iPad - many is the occasion my finger has slipped and the message has gone before I've finished!
I learned to touch type when I was 16. My dad said if I learned on his typewriter he would buy one for me so I got hold of a book with exercises etc and beavered away until I mastered it - and won my prize. The ability to type has stood me in good stead throughout my many careers.
Later in life in my 30s I also tackled speed writing too after failing with pitmans and found Greggs not too easy either. I learned because at an interview I said I had basic shorthand - and got found out! The man was really nice about it which made me even more determined!

Gally Oh those were the days. I learnt to touch type to William Tell at school. I also had private lesson once a week with four others from a couple of old ladies who would bash out the beat with a ruler on the desk.
DS can type almost as fast as me using two fingers.

I learned to touch type in 1966 and for many years thought it a wasted skill - then came computers and I was still able to do it! However, touch typing on an ipad has its challenges. I hope they don't change the QWERTY keyboard - apparently it was designed to slow down typists because the mechanical keys in the first type-writers got tangled up so it is not really ideal for computers.

I find the ipad much easier with a stylus.
My DD has a BA and two MAs, but she always says her RSA Proficiency in typing is the most useful thing she ever did.

I learned to type to the Big Band sound and still enjoy listening to it today. I can touch type and am still quite fast. The DGC are fascinated to see me looking at, and talking to, them whilst typing away - quite a cool party piece in their eyes. Still got my ancient portable typewriter but would love an Imperial 66 to do up although I doubt you could get the ribbons these days.

To be honest with computers the end result of a letter is usually pretty good whether or not you look but as you are probably the only one who knows you are looking at the keyboard does it matter?

I took my RSA Stage III typing alongside a two finger typist and she was much faster than me as well as gaining a distinction envy

I'd love to own an old fashioned typewriter again. I typed up my ex's MsC on a borrowed one but gave it back [I'm not sure that they'd've minded if I hadn't]. I always had visions of me typing my first novel late at night whilst chain smoking and drinking black coffee [didn't Balzac do that?].

I just got my laptop out (usually use the iPad / iPhone) and got really annoyed because it doesn't automatically capitalise after a full stop, as the iPad does.

I can type quite fast, (my own way!) but only because I have been using computers for so long.

Thanks everyone for your information, I have just embarked on "Dance Mat Typing" for children, so hopefully I should learn which digits go where. I do find it quite annoying, not being able to do this, I can knit pretty much anything and can dress make to a reasonable standard, so I think its a case of "Must try harder"

I'm a touch typist on my computer, but find it's not so easy to do that on an iPad. I tend to use about 3 fingers on each hand for that.

AlieOxon Fri 17-Jan-14 09:41:11

Hadn't occurred to me to do that feetle - how to do it in Windows 7?

feetlebaum Fri 17-Jan-14 09:12:20

@Tegan - I disable the caps lock on my computers - when I moved to Windows 8 the program to do that stopped working - aargh! Since then I have discovered a means that does work and I am a much happier chappie at the keyboard...

kittylester Fri 17-Jan-14 09:02:03

really - New phone can't cope!! Can't touch type on it either!!

kittylester Fri 17-Jan-14 09:00:42

I'm sure I can't be the only person who finds alphabetical key pads ( eg, car park ticket machines) _ really_ confusing, am I?

Gally, I'd forgotten William Tell and his part in my ability to touch type grin

tanith Fri 17-Jan-14 08:36:27

Newist the BBC do a touch typing course I'll see if I can find it...

Here it is , its in their children's courses but it looks like fun it might give you a good start.. there are also typing games to get you into a rythymn.. good luck

POGS Fri 17-Jan-14 01:00:55

Newest.

I am still getting to grips with things too.

I have actually got on quite well with my typing but I do not know for example how to make words appear in bold print, how to 'blue' things for others to read what I want to refer them to etc.

I guess I am saying that typing does get quicker with use but I just wanted you to know that we are not all wizz kids with a computer, quite the opposite but doing our best to keep up. I find very often by the time I have written what I want to say I have taken so long the point I want to make has lost it's it's point. confused

Gally Fri 17-Jan-14 00:59:13

I learnt to type on an old fashioned typewriter (the sort with a ribbon!) to the beat of the William Tell music. A classroom of us all bashing away in time and then 'ping' as we got to the end and returned the bar thingy in unison - hilarious; but I can still type away with the best of them grin

numberplease Fri 17-Jan-14 00:06:46

I`m a one finger typist, but it works for me!

Anne58 Fri 17-Jan-14 00:04:19

I can't touch type either, and also have the thing of looking up and finding I've been metaphorically shouting for the past two sentences!

In my last job one of the guys cured his assistant of the accidental capital letters thing by blu-tacking a pin side up drawing pin to the caps lock key!

tanith Thu 16-Jan-14 22:15:55

I taught myself to touch type a long while ago there are some online touch typing free programs you could try googling..

mollie Thu 16-Jan-14 20:08:14

I'm a touch typist but these days I type in a rather odd way on an iPad, two or three fingers on one hand and one finger on the other and all down to the lack of space! But years ago I was gob-smacked at the speed a colleague typed using just one finger on each hand - he typed almost faster than me and it was weird to watch. To be honest, I think it's really down to learning where the keys are set and practice, practice, practice...

Ana Thu 16-Jan-14 20:06:04

I'm a trained touch-typist but still often find several people have got their posts in before mine!

Can't help with the typing I'm afraid, newist, I do remember it took me several months a few decades ago to acquire the skill and speed!
