We have a home cinema and have been invited to ask the members of the WI to join us to watch a film. We can get a film from Love Film, but what I need are suggestions.......not too much sex or violence I would guess, and maybe maybe light-hearted (they are here for a good evening out).

Quartet?

Lilygran Tue 21-Jan-14 12:27:34

Steel Magnolias?

Captain Corelli is another one, or one for thought - the Rabbit Proof Fence - how the aboriginal children with white fathers were removed from their native mothers - good film.

Oh, and I'd forgotten that priceless Aussie film, 'Muriel's Wedding' - humour, pathos, but never sentimental. I've seen it many times on TV.

Oh, I remember that one, with Josie Lawrence. Lovely. I did love The Best Marigold Hotel, too.

there was a lovely film called something like Enchanted April [April in the title anyway] about a group of 4/5 ladies sharing an Italian villa holiday in about 1920 I have seen it twice, it has everything, a touch of humour, a spot of romance and each person comes away happier and calmer and wiser than before the holiday.

The best marigold doodah?

'The Notebook' with the divine Ryan Gosling. Wonderful love story over a life time.

I'd second Driving Miss Daisy - a wonderful film with wonderful actors. Some said it was sloppily sentimental and pussyfooted around the issue of race, but I thought it's subtlety made it all the more powerful.

Oh, I'd forgotten that one. Saw it after Jess recommended it and loved every minute of it. And probably one that not many people have seen.

the Sapphires - Aussie film about a supremes-style girl band going off to Vietnam - with Chris O'Dowd (who is quite fancy-able if you like slightly vulnerable Irishmen) . True-ish story.

Ladies in Lavender. Dames Dench and Smith. Lovely story but not sentimental. Or how about Tea with Mussolini? Also Dame Maggie.

I used to run 'film evenings' for our W.I. (a few friends round to share a DVD) and I found that almost anything went so if you like it Mishap then the chances are they will. They weren't too averse to a spot of 'sex and violence' in moderation - in the film obviously grin

Some like it Hot, though I imagine most WI members who'd enjoy it, know it almost word for word. It still makes me laugh.
Saving Mr Banks - wonderful film, and one to show once it's out on DVD

Stansgran Sat 18-Jan-14 17:26:39

Miss Pettigrew lives for a day.

Tegan Sat 18-Jan-14 17:08:21

I liked 'Summer in February' as well, although it was rather sad.

Mishap Sat 18-Jan-14 17:05:54

Thanks everyone - some brilliant ideas here!

Grannyknot Sat 18-Jan-14 17:04:13

Teehee I mixed up the film titles because Tom Hanks is in Captain Phillips and in Saving Mr Banks. Sunshine on Leith is a lovely, lovely, feelgood movie.

Your home cinema seems like a marvelous investment. I just remembered too that there is a thread on the forums about 'memorable movies', there must be loads on there you could check out. Good luck, what fun use of your home cinema.

Tegan Sat 18-Jan-14 16:30:04

Or The Artist? I defy anyone not to like that one.

Tegan Sat 18-Jan-14 16:29:05

I rather liked 'Salmon Fishing in the Yemen'. Pity Philomena isn't out yet. 'The Help' was good as well.

Anne58 Sat 18-Jan-14 16:00:56

The Blues Brothers, the first one.

Anne58 Sat 18-Jan-14 16:00:06

Why not go back to some classics that are not often seen, Lawrence of Arabia, Ryans Daughter.....

dollie Sat 18-Jan-14 15:51:42

The Trip to Bountiful is a moving film....

How about ...A Walk in the Clouds...

It is a 1995 American romantic drama film...the film is about a young soldier returning home from World War II who is looking to settle down and start a family with the woman he impulsively married just before enlisting. and is based on the 1942 Italian film Four Steps in the Clouds, written by Piero Tellini,

It really is a story you will remember smile
