In Germany the group of companies we call SMEs (small and medium sized businesses) are called the 'Mittelstand' They get a lot of help and support from government and industry and as a result account for the majority of Germany's exports. They export about three times as much as similar sized British companies, but then in Germany manufacturing of goods accounts for about 35% of the GDP compared with about 10% in the UK.
