Sport is a game which involves working up a bit of a sweat.

So, if he mentions 'the sport' it's not what you thought '
With apologies to the incomparable Eartha

Theseus thinks that a sport is something inn which blood is drawn and injuries incurred. Which lets him have a go at anything he doesn't like. [yawn]

Elegran shock

Elegran Sat 22-Feb-14 18:34:25

But pocket billiards is not a sport for a true gentleman.

annodomini Sat 22-Feb-14 18:33:17

Gentlemen, I understand, used to play billiards which is certainly a game.

That is a good one, underwater Tiddlywinks, I would rather watch that than football

Fox hunting is neither a game nor a sport. It isn't entertaining either.

Now, what about lady's broadsword and underwater tiddlywinks?

newist Sat 22-Feb-14 17:22:05

Thanks for that Elegran

Actually, I have a vague memory that a sport is something Gentlemen take part in and a game isn't...but I might be wrong.

janerowena Sat 22-Feb-14 16:50:06

I think of sports as being something a bit more competitive. On the whole though, I don't think there is much difference. Maybe there was, years ago.

Agus Sat 22-Feb-14 16:47:39

But you and I have just watched a game of rugby Annoconfused smile

I haven't a clue now newist so I will pass smile

newist Sat 22-Feb-14 16:18:59

Swimming I think is a sport. Water polo, is a game? confused

Agus Sat 22-Feb-14 15:49:11

Snooker is not a sport
Golf is not a sport - waste of a good walk so I've heard grin

annodomini Sat 22-Feb-14 15:46:47

I was once challenged on this point by an Iranian student - one of my ESOL beginners! I think it was apropos tennis which he insisted was a game, not a sport. However, it seems to me that 'sport' is a kind of blanket term for all kinds of physical activity. I would not claim darts as a sport, as some of its aficionados would, nor snooker. Those are games. But no doubt someone will have a different definition. wink

Aka Sat 22-Feb-14 15:44:52

IMO

Aka Sat 22-Feb-14 15:44:37

But javelin is.

Aka Sat 22-Feb-14 15:44:12

Darts in not a sport.

mollie Sat 22-Feb-14 15:34:22

I agree Galen. But it makes me laugh when I see those high paid footballers rolling around the pitch (under-turf heated no doubt) crying at a little tap on the leg. Or taking a dive. They ought to try playing rugby... very enertaining!

Galen Sat 22-Feb-14 15:30:20

Entertainment should be entertaining. Football is just boring.

newist Sat 22-Feb-14 14:49:35

That is a very good point mollie. I should of asked, Game Sport or Entertainment

mollie Sat 22-Feb-14 14:43:31

Good question, we were asking the same. Mr M said that motor racing isn't a sport because it's more a business now. Which in my mind makes football (think Rooney) simply entertainment!

newist Sat 22-Feb-14 14:40:28

My OH and I cannot agree on which is a sport and which is a game. Can anyone clarify for me, so peace and harmony can be restored to our home.
The list is quite big, Football, tennis, golf, curling etc.
