What makes you emotional?

I've been away at a conference for 2 days this week in the Midlands, and during one of the breaks I took a stroll and was enjoying the sunshine along with everyone else around, and even bought an ice cream cone.

A young man put busking stuff out and I propped myself against a nearby wall to give him a chance to entertain me grin. Out of this slender body dressed in a faded tracksuit and Converse trainers, poured the voice of an angel as he sang "You Raise Me Up", accompanied only by his electronic music box:

"When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me".

So far so good, wonderful voice, I thought, lovely young man. When he started singing:

"You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... to more than I can be"

... this foolish old woman started weeping for all the times she should have cried and didn't or couldn't - so I walked a short distance away where I could still hear him but wouldn't make a complete fool of myself, tears streaming down my cheeks and enjoyed my weep.

What?! I don't even like Westlife.

Glad you "liked it" Grannyknot there's nothing like a good cry is there? hmm

How awful Maniac I can't even begin to imagine how that must feel. sad

Grannyknot Sun 18-May-14 13:59:04

Gilly, that's a real heartbreaker!

Maniac Sun 18-May-14 10:59:58

Anything that reminds me of my GS (now 14) who I've been denied contact with for over 3 years.

Oldgreymare Sun 18-May-14 10:06:17

Me too !!!

Juliet Stevenson weeping buckets in Truly, Madly, Deeply makes me want to join in. sad

The Bridges of Maddison (sp?) County.... film and book!
I watch all the repeats hoping for a different ending.... but then it wouldn't be such a story, would it?

I love country ballads too Grannyknot have you heard Whisky lullaby by Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss? It comes with a good video/short film too and I never watch it without crying.

kitty eww for "I will always love you" - the screech factor is ever present.

I like DP's "Coat of Many Colours" and "Islands in the Stream" with Kenny Rogers, but I'm not a big fan of hers. I prefer "country ballad" to "country pop".

I've just remembered a film/song that always makes me blubber.
In Moulin Rouge, when Ewan McGregor sings "Come what may" to a dying Nicole Kidman.
I know it's mawkish, but I weep buckets every time.

kittylester Sat 17-May-14 18:09:51

I agree roses.

Lots of country songs have fabulous lyrics (I agree about Honey by BG) but there are lots of really mawkish ones that get to me. 'I will always love you' sung by Dolly Parton is the worst. Plus any of Johnny Cash's last albums.

I cried for Stephen Sutton too. sad

The Peace Park in Hiroshima and The Menin Gate really undid me! sad

Simply reading your post made me feel emotional. flowers

Flowerofthewest So sorry about your son and the awful bullying, poor dear boy.I'm sure you did what you could, and it's not easy to move schools for children, in my view most schools only pay lip service to this policy of no bullying and they want to sweep it under the carpet. It's a matter of national shame.

Speaking of choirs. When we were in New York we visited the site of the ruins of the Twin Towers. There is a little church there where the rescue workers used to come to rest and be fed before they went back into that hell hole. They had one of the beds set up in there that the rescuers used along with messages stacked up from all over the world, topped with a British policeman's helmet. Strangely, although the church was right next to the towers it remained unscathed. There was a choir of local school girls singing in there when we visited. I must confess I cried that day. sad

No tears this time but when living in Spain, I passed by a church and I could hear the choir singing (all young boys); I had no idea what they were singing about but it was so mesmerising (even from outside) I had to go in. Listening to them sent shivers down my spine; one of the most beautiful sounds I have ever heard.

Oh, and "Sunset" with a Royal Marines (or any other military band) playing as the flag is lowered. That final bugle call.....

(Part of my married life!)

Children singing - does for me every time. I'm hopeless at school concerts.

"You Are My Sunshine"

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamt I held you in my arms
When I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
So I hung my head, and I cried

Separated at birth Grannknot (well musically anyway) we obviously share the same taste. smile

My sister was telling me about the boy rapper on BGT Flower I don't particularly like rap music but apparently the words were very emotionally charged. Good for him raising awareness in this way.

Flowerofthewest Sat 17-May-14 00:19:02

I listened to the first 4 lines of the small boy rapping about bullying and how it affected him on BGT. I had to leave the room and found myself sobbing in the kitchen. My DH came in also with tears in his eyes and said 'It never goes away does it' My lovely son was so severely bullied and the thought of him waking up every day to go to the torture of school with no friends still breaks my heart even though we found Red Balloon and changed everything.

The Band of the Royal Marines playing Sunset always makes me cry. I only have to hear the opening bars.

Memories of a military childhood and it was played at my father's funeral.

Grannyknot, I was in Durham today, and a man called Jack Foley was singing Music of the Night, and I started crying while watching him.
I bought the CD. He is collecting for Cancer Research.
He is the son of a Durham miner.

Agus Fri 16-May-14 20:28:19

Pipe Bands. Especially The Dark Island.

goldengirl Fri 16-May-14 20:02:15

Marching. If it includes a band then the emotion rises almost immediately. I find it hard to watch the Remembrance Event at the Royal Albert Hall. Tears came when I watched the fly past after the Trooping of the Colour ceremony as well. I feel a right idiot and say its the sun making my eyes water. Luckily I've not been on a dull day!!!

annodomini Fri 16-May-14 16:37:20

in the 70s I was reduced to tears - of laughter - by Barefoot in the Park with Jane Fonda and Robert Redford. I did well up at Love Story and Steel Magnolias.
