I so don't care!

DBH is quite mild-mannered, but when I asked him this morning if we were completely out of it all he was decidedly grumpy. I asked when he was going to mow the lawns, he nearly bit my head off after he said the grass was still too damp and I laughed (it isn't, we haven't had rain for days) and stomped off to go butterfly-counting.

I think he had thought he would have a nice weekend doing nothing but important tv-watching, but it has all been spoilt for him. So if he can get like that, it's only too easy to see how awful some men can be to their wives.

DS 1 over here on a visit from Middle East, DH also here so very male household. And neither of them are remotely interested in Football. I am such a lucky daffodil

I think football is down to luck. Whether it happens to go right for them on the night.

Something not to say to the OH

I do not mind a good game of football which is what we should be seeing at the moment, what I really hate is the so called pundits at the beginning and the end of the matches wittering on, some of them cannot even string a decent sentence together. A 90 minute match seems to be on the TV for hours.
My particular bugbear is having to listen to the one who made all his money advertising junk food to children, not a good example.
Supporting Belguim and hope we do well.
I was quite relieved when Scotland did not get through, not making fools of ourselves.

I'm not anti-football, I bet most women aren't - it's the effect it has on our men and our country that we hate. It's the way it takes us over for a month and brings out base instincts in males that were at least nominally suppressed for the intervals between the tournament.

Ooh I like football....sorry and as I live on my own I am ok to say just what I wan't ha ha. Its great not having to pretend I love a sport that I don't. I detest Cricket and golf so I dont watch it.
I do agree with you Holly Daze that there just are no really good english players because the clubs have more foreign players in than english.

It takes years for players to gain the level of experience annodomini - the problem isn't turned around that quickly. Even when youngsters reach the dizzying heights of World Cup potential, they also have to deal with the lack of belief in the team (and themselves) to do well. I can't remember exactly when the rule was introduced (not that many years ago, maybe 7 or 8 years ago) and existing club members would have had their contracts honoured which would also delay opening up places to Spanish youngsters. They then have to work their way up through the lower leagues until they are bought by clubs in the higher leagues - takes ages!

I always wondered why Spanish players were so much better than ours - then one day, I was watching a local team play near where we lived (in Spain) and they were learning to play on a pitch with not one blade of grass but hard, packed earth - that was levelled by dragging an old door across it lol, very impressive play nonetheless.

That rule hasn't done Spain much good this time, Holly. If England is 'gutted' the Spanish team must be afraid to go home!

I do'n't believe we are c**p at football. The rules permitting Premiership clubs to have so many foreign players reduces the chances of home grown talent getting enough exposure to international games to reach the standard needed for the World Cup (look at Arsenal and Chelsea - there were a few seasons when Arsenal didn't have one, single solitary English player) which is why we don't succeed: www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/24467371

It's ridiculous to say that the English can't play as well (as implied by Arsen Wenger - so why is he managing an English Premier League Club and not one in another country?) - when Spain kept losing in the World Cup, they changed the rules for clubs in La Liga (I can't remember the percentages) whereby clubs could only have a small percentage of foreign players to enable Spanish youngsters the experience and exposure to compete on the world stage. England has to do the same if it wants to compete.

My DH watched the match last night, but wasn't in the least worried by the outcome, he said we played badly and deserved to lose. Thank goodness for that then.He used to care more [when younger] but doesn't get in a strop anymore.I have no interest at all in football.

Jings Isn't it awful? It was recently on the radio that extra police were needed or were being trained (can't remember which) to deal with the expected increase in domestic violence.

We don't need to lose many more games (one I think) before the hysteria should be over.

Some men will use anything as an excuse to be violent to their partner. Especially when alcohol is involved.
