Every sympathy if you live near a festival site

We used to live near the site where Yn Chruinnaght was held every year (it's a Celtic festival). The first time it was on, I thought how lovely it was - until I realised this was non-stop partying from Friday night until Sunday night and the music was played over seriously loud loudspeakers - the DJs voice became something I had visions of plotting to put an end to! Strange choice of venue as it was near a lot of flats and houses where young children live - goodness knows how parents managed to get their children off to sleep - and stay asleep. That went on for years and I used to dread it (I am a very light sleeper); thankfully, the festival was moved in the end.

I also have every sympathy for those who are not directly involved with a festival but have to live with the fallout from them.

The top of our road is T junction with the village High Street (about 100 yards away) and in the hot weather ever silly so and so things we want to hear thumping beats as they wait to turn left or right. It only happens at school run time and for about an hour between 5 and 6pm but it drives me bonkers.

You don't need to be near a festival to find intrusive music.

Oh we have that too Kitty fortunately they are not paused at time like you have to suffer but we live on the coast road which links to beach areas and they roar up and down with music full volume. Bit at least that's over in a few seconds the speed they go.

can sympathise with you nina have a new neighbour that started music playing at 4pm and at 2am still going!! because the last time he did it, it went on to early morning, I knew that he had plans to go on again til then.

I had had a bad day and was in a bad mood and this time I just could not face it--I tried with all my might to ignore it and let it go but eventuall, as I say at 2am I could take no longer, I opened the window and asked to see the owner when he cam eout I just said please can you keep it down a bit, it is 2am in the morning--these things can get ugly but he was a gent and turned the music down followed by an apology and a bottle of wine in way of an apology.

What I learnt was having a bad day and being kept up all night by loud noise does not mix

What you are describing kitty'is what I call bang bang music and I hear these bang bang cars everywhere, T junctions, traffic lights and supermarket car parks. I can almost see their cars vibrate and wonder how they can concentrate on driving or would they hear a siren coming up behind. Drives me crazy .

I really sympathise with anyone who has to endure inconsiderate other peoples loud music, especially when it intrudes into their homes.

I too can see how awful it is nina we have it round here..OH is very poorly but of course other people carry on their lives which is fair enough..but banging thumping music, along with dog barking and loud vices (once the alcohol kicks in) is all a familiar story, a lot of neigbours just have no respect..they come into their castles and think that a 6ft fence stops the noise, it is really time the government took action with these ignorant people, and as soon as we have a government that promises to do something constructive about noise nuisance. then I will start voting again.

But your mention of loud alcoholic vices was spot on.

The government has done something about it, biker. You can go on your local authority website under environmental health and complain about noisy neighbours. It might be that you are not the only one affected.
If nobody complains, then the council presumes there is no problem.

hi durhamjen I have heard stories from locals who have been there done that and complete waste of time, the council do not like people complaining as it "takes up their time to investigate" the hoops you have to jump through make most people give up..hence the revellers win everytime..and very few ever reach court. It may seem simple enough..when they say "oh ring your environmental place" only to be given an out of hours telephone number..which says.."this office is now closed" etc etc so better to invest in plenty of pairs of earplugs,,unfortunately OH cant wear them.

We had a wonderful afternoon as the farmhouse behind pur garden were hosting a garden party in aid of the local hospice and thy had a "brass band*!!! DD2 + partner and Basil my grand dog had come up for the day so we had a background of (lovely music - mostly) which DD and BF were most impressed by!!

Environmental health do not necessarily take them to court. Sometimes the advice given is enough to make them turn down their noise.
My son's a trading standards officer, and works with environmental health. If the council are not doing their job, complain to your MP.
The problem with the English is that we do not complain enough, biker.
You pay your council tax to pay for them to investigate. They get paid for their time to be taken up in this way.

Decent music I wouldn't mind i.e. brass band. But the DJ's inane banter and the rubbish he was playing was not entertaining

We used to live in a middle terace house in Hampshire, and our eldest son played the saxophone in a band. He and his mates used to rehearse at our house, so we often had to apologise to the neighbours. However, they usually said they did not mind, as they were all good musicians, so they got the show for free.

Occasional noise nuisance, such as a yearly festival, concert or whatever is one thing, but when it's all day, every day it must be intolerable. It never seems to be simply a case of reporting it to your local council/environmental health authority, you have to keep a log, make detailed notes, have someone round to check the decibel levels etc.

That's because you have to have proof of the effect it has on your life, Ana. Otherwise it could just be construed as malicious.

So yet again the victims have to jump through hoops just to prove that they have a genuine claim.

Illegal here for any noise on Sundays, even grass cutting is banned, and the police respond to loud music after 11.00pm at night, any night, as the students living next door to us know all too well, if they get called out more than 3 times in six months it becomes a criminal offence. the worst thing we have here, is after the football, drivers going around for hours blowing horns all the time, being a very multi-national city there is a lot of that in Brussels at the moment !!!!!!

I'd like to shout, TURN IT DOWN to the gang that's harvesting lettuces from the field at the back of us. The rig is set up with speakers so they can all listen to boom boom boom boom boom boom.....wherever they are in a forty acre field.

DD and I agreed, over a morning coffee on the patio, that if we were doing that job we'd need something to keep us going as well. DH on the other hand is doing a 'Prince Philip' as he tries to compete with his little radio in his workshop.

It'll be alright when the four dogs stop barking.....

Our local council make you keep a diary then show it to the offenders. Needless to say not many people now complain as the offenders can then cause you more upset.
