nannotgran I have had a chesty cough for a month! Just a cough at first [for 2 weeks] then sinus probs . I have had 2 lots of different antibiotics and the last ones just finished seemed to have done the trick. The doctor said he would not do anything until someone has had a cough for 3 weeks [but he must have noticed my expression] and it wasn't that far off 3 weeks so gave me tablets. The receptionist said there is a lot of this around just now.
It's called 'silent reflux' or 'laryngo-phryngeal reflux', nina and I have to take several kinds of medication to control mine. My vocal chords were badly affected until I had the right treatment.
A doctor at a talk I went to recently said these lung cancer adverts are terrifying a lot of people especially as most coughs do last for several weeks, although it's still always best to see a doctor.
I read an article in the paper this week where the GP said that reflux can cause a cough. He said that it's not true that if you have reflux you will have heartburn. He suggested raising the head of your bed and to take omeprazole (available over the counter) for a couple of weeks to see if there is any improvement. If not see your GP. I took note of this as I have had a cough since middle of May. I shall be taking his advice.
