I like the tartan but not the rest

Yes, I agree that my first post was badly worded. In fact, the shirts might not be so unfomfortable-looking if they were more blousy in style!

I'm glad you don't think there's anything intrinsically wrong with blousy men's shirts, though what you wrote did have that connotation, I felt: "For me, the main problem is that the men's shirts look like blouses. If they were in a plain colour they wouldn't be so bad..."

Women can wear shirts or blouses so men should be able to as well, without it being a "problem".

I don't think it matters that the uniform is hideous... so long as its hideousness doesn't detract from the people's sporting prowess. Roll on The Games! (hopefully!)

The only part of this uniform that tells me this is the Scottish team is that the men are wearing kilts. As for the rest of the outfit, I don't identify with it at all. Looking at the female outfits, I don't feel any Scottish connection is there.

Actually, I only meant that the print material the shirts are made from make them look 'blousy' - which would be fine if they didn't clash with the awfulness of the kilt tartan...sexist my arse!

No, they won't, but if it is done to be noticed (as previously mentioned) then they are going about it the wrong way. There were some very elegant outfits last time, and they are the ones I remember.

So sports people will only be noticed for the strangeness of their clothing.

Oh, I agree as to disliking that particular shade of turquoise, but there's no reason why men shouldn't wear any colour fabric that exists.

The kilts and the plaids (shawls thingies) reflect the country and its culture.

Yes, my friend's husband wears an outfit very similar to that to weddings.

The turquoise colour though - it could be softened. It looks as if an indian or Asian had designed the outfits, far more suitable for a bright and sunny climate. It doesn't reflect the country or the character. All they will be noticed for is the strangeness of their clothing.

Why do we need to 'like' them? Rhetorical question. We don't. We just need to be able to notice them easily.

How sexist to object to men wearing blouse-type shirts! Why shouldn't they? Actually, men's shirts to wear with kilt Scottish men often wear blousy shirts with the kilt, like this. It looks great. Better than stupid ties.

And there's no good reason why men shouldn,t wear turquoise either. It's only a bloody colour!

jingl I cannot imagine any young woman of my acquaintance choosing to wear a dress like that - dowdy design and crude colour. Perhaps the Scottish charity shops will be full of them as soon as the games are over.

Those girls will be able to wear those frocks afterwards. The others won't.

I like the Malaysian outfits.

The brown shoes and knee socks make the chaps look as if they have been wading in cow muck.
The women's dresses look like hospital gowns with a belt.
The whole effect is ghastly. I feel sorry for the athletes in particular Eiligh Child "poster girl" for the games who will have the cameras on her.
What is wrong with having both sexes in the same kit please?

There are some photos online of the models posing with someone who is presumably the designer who has a very distinctive personal style.

The Australian outfits are also interesting...

Those cross-over dresses are frumpy, like a 1950s granny's pinny. I am so sorry for the athletes having to wear those outfits. What a freaky designer.

I love the tartan.... just not the turquoise shirts and dresses which are dreadful. I think there is a pattern on the fabric.

What about if they wore a plain T shirt in a toning shade. A tan colour like the men's socks, or maroon, even a plain white T.

For the ladies what about a plain shift dress in the tartan.

For me, the main problem is that the men's shirts look like blouses. If they were in a plain colour they wouldn't be so bad - and not that awful turquoise!
