I can't find the previous thread that I started about the commemorations and my aversion to those that include weapons.
I have just watched the Prom whose last few minutes were at the exact time that war was declared 100 years ago. It was respectful and moving and entirely appropriate. No guns, no weapons at all; just beautiful music (Taverner), a short poem from Wilfred Owen (that put guns in their proper place as instruments of death) and the silent promenaders with lighted candles. The fact that it was only a few minutes long seemed right too - not flogging the subject to death - just a few minutes of reflection at the end of the evening.
