for stuff like this which, BTW, is superb.

MiceElf Sun 31-Aug-14 09:01:06

Just metaphysical solipsism, Grumppa and Galen.

rosequartz Sun 31-Aug-14 09:28:28

Yes, grumpa but does the depth of our thinking make us more, or less, equal?

Is a female deep thinker more equal to a male deep thinker than she is to another female whose depth of thought only broaches the shallows?

Immanuel Kant was a real pissant
Who was very rarely stable.
Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar
Who could think you under the table.
David Hume could out-consume
Schopenhauer and Hegel,
And Wittgenstein was a beery swine
Who was just as schloshed as Schlegel.
There's nothing Nietzsche couldn't teach ya'
'Bout the raising of the wrist.
SOCRATES, HIMSELF, WAS PERMANENTLY PISSED...
John Stuart Mill, of his own free will,
On half a pint of shandy was particularly ill.
Plato, they say, could stick it away;
Half a crate of whiskey every day.
Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle,
Hobbes was fond of his dram,
And Rene Descartes was a drunken fart: "I drink, therefore I am"
Yes, Socrates, himself, is particularly missed;
A lovely little thinker but a bugger when he's pissed!

Am I the only person on Gransnet who does not know what a Philosophy Forum is? I have read all the posts and am none the wiser. Is there any one out there who can explain in words suitable for a "Flo of very little brain"

KatyK Sun 31-Aug-14 10:29:30

Oh thank you Flo. I was going to post yesterday that I would have to 'watch from the sidelines' as I am not very bright! blush

grumppa Sun 31-Aug-14 10:30:47

A Philosophy Forum, littleflo, could consist of innumerable attempts to define it, leading to one agreed conclusion, or several, or none.

Personally, I would prefer a Philosophical Symposium, or drinking party.

rosequartz Sun 31-Aug-14 10:33:44

littleflo this thread would not make anyone wiser about much at all except méandering.
lilygran [ grin]

Leaving it to my obviously much more intellectually superior GNetters

whenim64 Sun 31-Aug-14 10:37:55

How about a self-selecting philosophy forum, then?

Those who want to join in, those who don't want to don't feel you need to smile

Elegran Sun 31-Aug-14 10:47:29

- and those who don't want to can refrain from commenting on the high-falutin notions of those who do . . . . . .

rosequartz Sun 31-Aug-14 10:50:56

What a good idea!

It's not compulsory then? [relief]

Ana Sun 31-Aug-14 10:51:29

It'll never catch on!

ffinnochio Sun 31-Aug-14 10:55:19

I knew I'd learn something from this thread, but so far it isn't what I was expecting. Pity.

when - with you on your comments.

whenim64 Sun 31-Aug-14 10:57:39

More ideas for future debates here. Can humans predict the future? How long do you wait before you can confirm something never caught on? grin wink

Ana Sun 31-Aug-14 11:00:29

'twas a joke, when! Must remember to reinforce with emoticon next time...grin

GrannyTwice Sun 31-Aug-14 11:04:25

But Elegan I doubt you they-- would. Your comment is exactly why the excellent idea of a philosophy forum would just get sneered at and derailed by others not wanting to engage in the debate. In fact, a bit more understanding of basic philosophy would enlighten some threads that get very heated -the Rotherham one and the boy taken to Spain are two examples. Very often disagreements that are expressed are based on different philosophical and ethical positions that we hold and teasing those out could lead to more enlightening and enlightened debate. Saying that wanting this sort of forum is high- faultin is exactly the sort of anti- intellectualism which stifles intelligent debate in this country and which is encouraged by those in power because who wants the hoi- polloi to be encouraged to think? We might actually see through the paucity and hypocrisy of their thinking and subsequent actions

newist Sun 31-Aug-14 11:16:26

This does need a lot of thinking about.....

Elegran Sun 31-Aug-14 11:24:45

G2 - I am glad you crossed through the possibility that I personally would be sneering at the idea!

whenim64 Sun 31-Aug-14 11:33:15

Mine was a joke too, Ana. Hence the grin and wink

GrannyTwice Sun 31-Aug-14 11:34:55

Well using the phrase high falutin was hardly encouraging or supportive was it?

janerowena Sun 31-Aug-14 11:37:46

I don't mind swearing and bad language or even personal attacks on myself - I find it hard to watch the hurt I can see that other people feel. That's all.

Still love the idea of a forum, though. It would just need a 'not for the faint-hearted' warning attached.

janerowena Sun 31-Aug-14 11:40:30

jings I brought MPs into it because they stand up and hope that they have found a solution to a problem, knowing full well that before they can even get their idea out they are likely to be lambasted, ridiculed and barracked.

Elegran Sun 31-Aug-14 11:41:45

Read it again, G2. I was referring to the fact that there are those on the forum (NOT ME) who regard any kind of serious theoretical discussion as evidence that some others are showing off and being elitist.

I should encourage and support such a forum to the limit. Exchange of logical thoughts about basic principles without personal vituperation would be an excellent theme for a forum.

How is it that before such a forum even exists, we are exchanging tart posts?

Nonu Sun 31-Aug-14 11:44:35

I don"t like the swearing,bad language, or personal attacks on F"Ms .

Completely unnecessary in my book .

Suppose some get a kick out of it !!

hmm

GrannyTwice Sun 31-Aug-14 11:51:05

Thank you for making that clear Elegan- I misunderstood and am glad of you now clearly expressed support. I actually think there would be less need for tart posts on a philosophy forum.

Nytsom Sun 31-Aug-14 12:06:35

I exist - therefore I am,[hmm[ Or is that the other way round? grin
