Wearing Make Up. Age 63.

I am 63. I have been wearing make up for nearly 50 years. Foundation, powder, eye shadow, eye liner, mascara, and lipstick. Would never go downstairs, open the front door, or go out without it. Over the years it has been toned down though..... Not garish.

Just lately, maybe over the past 12 months, when I have been getting ready for bed, I've realised that I've 'forgotten' to use my make up.......

Nothing 'bad' happened when I didn't wear it..... Life carried on as usual! I'm now wondering if it's actually worth bothering with the daily ritual? When I have my make up on, I feel 'dressed' and ready to face the world. But life went on as normal when I didnt !

Tegan I've read that you need to be careful with that stuff that claims to make your eyelashes grow as certain ingredients can cause eye colour to change permanently shock

Not all of them have the same ingredients, but it's the ones that contain the stuff used for treating glaucoma. Mumsnet had a discussion a while ago

Light foundation, loose powder ,blusher , lipstick and no way do I leave the house without mascara. Takes me 5 mins. in the morning. I refresh lipstick when needed. If I'm going out somewhere special or in the evening I will add eye shadow and take a little more time. I'm not bothered if anyone notices or not. I feel better for a bit of colour.

Have never worn a lot of make up, don't know how to apply blusher, etc. Sometimes in the past I would wear mascara when going out for the evening, but lipstick was all I ever wore, and even that I rarely think about. I have to wear sunscreen on my nose even in the winter, otherwise it bursts into spots!

Oops 'dopy' should have had a strikethrough !!

Coolgran65 Fri 16-Jan-15 22:52:46

Always wear makeup every day = goes on first thing and then I forget about it. Except to refresh lippy throughout the day as it really helps.
Smudgy eyeliner and blonde brow glimmersticks from Avon.

Earrings.
Usually gel nails done every 5 weeks - keeps hands looking tidy.
Nails are paid for using salon gift vouchers.

Look really ~~dopy~~ ropy without some help. smile

Probably too late for me.

I will just admire the DDs' and DGDs' eyelashes (lucky duckies).

Tegan Fri 16-Jan-15 22:43:55

Aha; it was Lumigan for glaucoma.

Tegan Fri 16-Jan-15 22:42:44

You can buy something from Boots that costs a fortune but is supposed to make your eyelashes grow. I seem to remember reading about an eye drop for a certain eye condition that had a side efect of making lashes grow but I didn't make a note of what that eye drop was [but I bet it's in the stuff that Boots sells wink].

I may try the Vaseline. It's just the eyelashes, the eyebrows would grow like that model wotshername? except they are a mixture of dark and white, and my hair is not too bad.
Perhaps I could transplant the hairs from my chin grin

Penstemmon Fri 16-Jan-15 22:33:48

Beconase did for my eyebrows! The doc said it could be a side effect and it was! I have not got the knack to make them look natural so i just leave them!
I moisturise and use foundation, blusher plus mascara and lippy. None of it lasts long but I imagine I look less 'flat' with it on than not!

Tegan Fri 16-Jan-15 22:12:46

A little bit of Vaseline on your eyelashes at night might improve them. Mine are pretty non existant but not as bad as my hair and eyebrows and I'm sure the Vaseline helps.

I have to find my eyelashes first, they are very sparse these days.

I did buy a Clinique cream blusher the other day and I must say it is lovely. Expensive but it looks as if it will last for a long time.

Every older woman I know [even those who used to have darker skin] says they look washed out now, pale or ill without a bit of colour. If just at home I only use a bb cream, but eye make up [as in a bit of mocha coloured eye shadow, mascara and eyebrow pencil] plus blusher and lipstick if going out.Perfume and a bit of jewellery as well, even if just earrings. It makes me feel better, don't care if anyone notices or not.Have never worn foundation, but moisturiser with a hint of colour works well.

inishowen Fri 16-Jan-15 18:50:34

I have good skin so don't wear foundation. I always wear lipstick when going out. However I'm convinced that I could walk through our town in my nightie and no one would notice!

If i'm out without a bit of make up someone tells me I look ill or tired. I don't get on well with liquid foundation but the mineral powder stuff is great, really easy to put on. I've just had a shipping order of it from Avon. It should last me years.

Bourjois makeup is still going strong - probably the rouge is too (although they probably call it blusher now).

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 16-Jan-15 18:30:29

Your granny's?!!! I used Bourjois rouge for years! It was very good.

Katek Fri 16-Jan-15 18:21:48

Like my granny's Bourjois (?) rouge!

NotTooOld Fri 16-Jan-15 18:20:20

Ooh, thanks, janerowena. Good tip that. Like rosequartz I find blusher is a must especially in the winter. I find I have to be careful not to put too much on and look like one of those old ladies with circles of bright pink on their cheeks, love 'em.

janerowena Fri 16-Jan-15 18:13:22

NotTooOld try Boots 30 day mascara on your eyelashes. It's a dye, you just mix it and leave it on, like mascara. It doesn't last 30 days but it does last a good two weeks. My eyelashes are very fair so I have always used it when swimming.

Katek Fri 16-Jan-15 18:08:49

I still use foundation, powder, eyeliner and mascara on a daily basis. I've changed my foundation over the years to a lighter 'mousse' type as it sits better on older skin and use a soft eyeliner pencil which I can smudge/blend. Gives a much softer effect.

NotTooOld Fri 16-Jan-15 18:05:50

I agree with janerowena - primer is good. If you have Paul McCartney eyes, primer applied to the dark bit underneath the eye makes the area less shiny and therefore less obvious. Try it! It does work.

I can't wear eye makeup any more as it makes my eyes run. I've got used to being eye-less now but I wish I could at least wear mascara. I cheer myself up by remembering that 'less is more' for us (slightly) older ladies.

loopylou Fri 16-Jan-15 18:03:12

Primer? I need polyfilla sad!
I must make more effort......

rosequartz Fri 16-Jan-15 17:52:43

Light foundation, blusher (a must!), and mascara, lipstick, sometimes eyebrow pencil - if I am going out, but not at home unless we're expecting visitors.
I wish I could wear more eye makeup but it never looks right and makes my eyes run, so sometimes it's not even mascara.
Sometimes I don't bother at all if it's just a quick visit to the supermarket and then I always seem to bump into someone I know!

janerowena Fri 16-Jan-15 17:22:07

Primer! Seriously. It evens out everything beautifully before you put on your makeup, if I am feeling worse than usual I reach for it. No.7 is fine but I expect there are others that may do an even better job. It's a bit like putting on the render before getting on with the plastering. grin
