I took my mum her dentures today.......

I second that rubylady I loved all his books, and even when he was around 12, 13, my beloved DS2 liked nothing more than me reading them aloud to him! Many was the time that we had to stop to get over a fit of laughing!

daffydil Poor Deric is no longer with us. I met him and Aileen some time ago. I painted a picture for him of Thermal, his then kitten off his book The Cat who Came in from the Cold. He was lovely and his books are a fantastic read, you feel like you are one of the family reading them. Very sad that we won't have any more from him.

I remember that, too! It was funny and so true!

My mum, who has not smoked for about 10 years keeps getting cross that I won't give her one of mine - she has forgotten that I've never smoked at all!!

Phoenix I was just about to mention Deric Longden's book 'Lost for Words' and the same TV play which was excellent and won an Emmy award. Pete Postlethwaite played the son. I think you can get it on DVD and it is well worth watching.

Deric Longden wrote a book (or maybe 2) about his mother's dementia, it was made into a TV play with Thora Hird playing his mother. I recommend the book, very funny in places.

A friend's mum forgot that she smoked! After a lifetime habit she was unsurprisingly irritable but didn't know why. Dementia as a way of improving health was an unexpected blessing!

My dad told me the other day that he loves me, the first time I've heard it I think. It's took him having dementia to say it though, lol. Although I do get my own back and tell him I have taken him to some really great places, he has just forgot!

My mum was lost to me and all of us in her last few years. She did not recognise anyone. But bizarrely she told a carer that she loved her "nearly as much as my eldest daughter" - that's me. Did she ever tell me she loved me, even when she was comps mentis - well, no!

My MIL once asked for broccoli flavoured yoghourt. Still not sure what she actually meant!

Actually, when I first arrived the lovely staff were encouraging her to poo on the commode! I will try to forget that image!

Jelly with mustard Nina, bleugh! One of my great aunts used to make jelly sandwiches -a touch messy!

Never is a sense of humour or irony more needed, so glad you are managing to hang on to yours Kitty

There are some sad times to remember too though. My Mum didn't recognise me - she thought I was the nurse who had come to put drops in her eyes. That made me sad but I went along with it. Being able to have a little chuckle must help I am sure.

I've been in your situation. Lona is right it's the funny times you remember. Will never forget arriving to find mum eating a pot of jelly with mustard on top !!

She must have a wonderful social life kitty
You will remember these incidents much more than the bad times

Oh dear- great you can keep your GSOH- the only way to go.

My mil also regulalry thought she had the press waiting for her, and that men were whistling at her and admiring her. If it helps them- hey ho- let it go.

(((( hugs)))) - you will never regret being so kind and attentive to her, when she is no longer there. It will make that joruney so much soother- so don't give up. but look after yourself too.
