What small things cheer you up? I'm not talking about the gratitude you might have for family, friends etc just the little things in life.
Yesterday I cleaned the house through - well overdue - and in the evening a friend asked if she could overnight on Monday because of complications with her house sale/purchase. I was immensely cheered to think that for once I could welcome unexpected guests into a clean house, rather than the usual tip.
It turned out that I had bought an unusually sweet and delicious net of clementines, so I ate four of them whilst watching TV.
I realised that I don't care about the huge and hideous greenhouse my neighbours have erected (think Little House on the Prairie) because they are lovely people. They just have really bad taste in greenhouses.
What small events or realisations brighten your day?
The grass is growing luxuriantly again – maybe too luxuriantly – after the long dry summer.
Although I have the talent of a warthog when it comes to painting and drawing, I have discovered that I can make fun collages. Strangely this has come about because my language teacher encourages the use of visual means of remembering what we have learned in class.
I can remember what I have learned in my language class.
My grandchildren were at my house at various times every day last week – and they are still looking forward to seeing me on Tuesday.
I found a family photo I hadn't seen before - labelled 'Uncle Arthur, dad's brother' - whose Uncle? Finally worked out it was my gran who wrote it, so it must be the one I thought of four Arthurs in my tree......! I think. But I was happy working it out.
The wind's dropping here but not before a fence panel, the swinging chair and the garden table have been blown across the garden. I'm certainly more cheerful because it's calmer Watching David Attenborough's Africa is certainly making my afternoon much cheerier!
I've got an old family photograph that I found when my mum died; her cousin told me who the people were in the photo but, when I looked on the back of the photo recently the list of names had disappeared. I turned the house upside down at the time looking for a copy of that list [I always duplicate things] but found nothing. I've just looked through a photo album and, guess what; a copy of the names is there. I can now start again on the family tree that I've been planning to do for ages. I'd resigned myself to not knowing who these people were. I've been planning a trip to Birmingham to do some research and I now have much more information to go on .
The fact that the large tree that had fallen across the road as I was driving back from archery, fell before I reached it, not as. I had to wait until the other ( male ) archers caught up with me and moved the tree and branches, I could get home!
Lying in bed listening to the sound of the Pacific Ocean thundering onto the beach, which is what I am doing now (it's half past midnight). I love the roaring sound. The power of the ocean is frightening and exciting all at once, and also has a strange calming effect. Lots of other things make me cheerful too!
I read an article about the decline in some of our wild bird species and goldfinches seem to be the worst affected by an infection that can be spread if we don't maintain hygiene in our bird feeders. Mine will be washed thoroughly when the little darlings have emptied them yet again. The collective term, 'a charm of goldfinches' is just so appropriate, isn't it?
Lovely, hilda. I hope you have lots of happy moments like that.
Anno I saw a pair of goldfinches dancing in and out of the laurel bushes in my back garden yesterday, then as I drove away down the lane, there were more of them. What a great sight, after seeing so few in recent years.
Watching the baby birds outside my kitchen window learning to bathe in the water on the garage roof opposite very cute indeed, and just taking my joint of beef out of the oven to find it didn't shrink too much after all my concerns.
