Yes, I was Head Girl - and to this day I clearly remember my feeling of shock when the announcement was made in assembly at school. I literally ran all the way home and burst into the house to tell my mum - who was completely unimpressed and delivered a stinging put-down. It was the day I gave up ever hoping I was capable of doing anything that would elicit a proud or pleased response from her.

No. Anyway, it's not looked as 'the thing' to have a large and pregnant prefect, for some reason!

The highest job I ever had was in the last year of junior school, I was the monitor who went out with the bell ringer just before 9am, my job was to write down the names of any pupils who arrived after the bell was rung. I wasn`t very popular

Chance would have been a good thing! Not that I ever wanted to be a Prefect let alone Head Girl.

Didn't 'qualify' as not RC , which also precluded you from anything vaguely important, almost like being invisible really unless, of course, you were in trouble......

My father's claim to school fame was flushing phosphorus down the loo and blowing the toilet pan out into the playground! DD and DS most impressed!

hey! Clarence Road! I had a friend who lived in a bungalow on that road.
it was a nice small town, don't know what it's like now though, probably expanded quite a lot.Probably wall to wall houses between there and Southend!

I was a junior prefect , called a green ribbon in our school , for about a month but it went to my head and got demoted for cheek

I lived in Clarence Road, not that far from you roses. Mum and I used to walk through Bull Lane regularly as one of our routes to and from the High Street.

Me! Prefect and Vice Head Girl - and then I married someone who took the Bursary money he won and ran away and didn't finish high school. A perfect match. Lol.

Not a prefect, but DBH was. Rudely known as Perfect Pete, the Porky Prefect!

The main perk for being a prefect at my school was the prefect's common room which had a kettle and armchairs. Upper sixth non-prefects only had a classroom with desks and wooden chairs.

Never a prefect, that would have meant being on the same side as the teachers!

I was a prefect, but only because the entire Upper Sixth were given that honour. We all wore what I can only describe as a sort of green judo belt known as a girdle. The head girl and her 2 deputies wore pale blue girdles and were hand-picked. I suspect I'd have been somewhere very near the bottom of the list for those positions.

Good Lord Mishap I wanted to go to the Sweyne at Rayleigh because several of my friends were there. Did you live in Rayleigh? We moved there from Hutton when I was 13, and my parents wanted me to continue at my school in Brentwood, so I had to endure an hour long journey every morning and afternoon. (Though this was a good opportunity to do the homework I was supposed to have done the evening before instead of going out with my friends )

And no, I was never a prefect as I left school for college at the end of the Upper Fifth.

Sorry - my last post reads a bit 'puffed up' . I was one of what was called the Games People and sports always took preference over studies. I later wished I had spent more time on the studying.

We were the first Lower Sixth in the history of the school (they said) not to produce any suitable candidates for prefects! I'm slowly recovering.

I went to a girls' grammar school and was a prefect and Games Captain. I continued to play netball in the London BusinessHouses League. My school was Putney County and in 1951 I took part in a hockey demonstration in the sports arena at the Festival of Britain.

Not a chance. I was not a natural leader of anything at school - totally overlooked by all and sundry. I didn't discover my leadership qualities until I joined the services!

Not me. I was so shy and lacking in confidence that I never opened my mouth at school unless I absolutely had to, so I can see why I wasn't an obvious choice for the job!

Glass! Did you still play netball after you left school? When we moved to the NE I played at the YMCA in North Shields, but had to give it up when I went back to work full time
My school didn't have prefects. There was a head boy and head girl, and a small sixth form council, but everyone in the upper sixth had to do prefect duties, mainly herding people who were lurking in the toilets at lunch time out into the cold to get some fresh air.
I did get colours for swimming and was Swimming Captain and a Vice-House Captain though.

A good thing about being a prefect was that you had to sew gold cord round your blazer. Apart from that, I seem to remember that we stood at the bottom of the stairs telling the juniors to take off their scarves! When there was the Asian flu epidemic, we stood in for ailing teachers with the junior classes! Can't imagine what they learnt from us.

Our prefects were all from 6th year and I left at the end of 5th. I'm glad about that as I'd have hated to be a prefect.
My speciality was turning up late, missing assembly and avoiding the eagle eye of the Head so I could slip into class and not get the belt. (Yes, a real belt.)
