In case you're following the hacker story over on Mumsnet, we wanted to let you know that there is nothing to show that Gransnet is under a similar attack. However, as a precaution it might be a good idea to update your passwords (good practice to do this regularly anyway). You can reset your password here. And as usual, if you spot anything odd, please report it to us or email us at [email protected]

x posts, Lara, I'm sorted thanks! smile

I cannot put another password into my life. I just can't.

soontobe Wed 19-Aug-15 12:41:38

I read somewhere on mumsnet, that the people who have got hacked and had their passwords hacked into, the hacker can see the persons' postcode. Not sure if that is true or not.

Ana Wed 19-Aug-15 12:44:11

Not sure why that would matter, soontobe. Sometimes hundreds of houses share the same postcode.

You seem to be determined to spread alarm and panic! grin

soontobe Wed 19-Aug-15 12:54:32

Mine is 8 houses Ana grin

Ana Wed 19-Aug-15 13:04:06

54 share my postcode.

soontobe Wed 19-Aug-15 13:06:55

Plus I am trying to persuade jingl and others that it might be a good idea to do it.
As I posted on the other thread last week, I dont think I need to as I have a seperate email and password just for gransnet, as I am aware that hackers like to target mumsnet.
And there was a thread only yesterday, concerning Facebook, that showed that posters can get upset by this type of thing.

How could they deduce a postcode from a password unless the account that had been hacked had the owners name, address and postcode listed on it? If it were, they would have not only the postcode but the entire address, right down to the house number and the note "If no-one is in, leave deliveries in the open conservatory at the back" - from which they could break into the house unobserved.

I think anyone hacking in to get a password is more interested in what they can gain from knowing that password than in exactly where the owner lives.

soontobe Wed 19-Aug-15 13:39:45

True probably, on all of that.

kittylester Wed 19-Aug-15 14:33:47

I think I'm going to use 'nasty little hacker' as my new favourite expletive!! grin

snowberryZ Wed 19-Aug-15 14:37:42

I'm revisiting Gransnet after a long time away, so have just created a brand new password.

POGS Wed 19-Aug-15 16:18:09

Lara

Just reset my password, no problems at all.

I too was sorry to read in today's Daily Mail Justines story.

I hope both she and her family are OK. Horrible experience.

DH's gran had two useful sayings, one of which was They're not all locked up.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 19-Aug-15 17:54:44

We are not likely to be targeted by a hard done by (in their opinion) Dads' group.

Ana Wed 19-Aug-15 18:25:13

Don't know what's the matter with GN this evening, it keeps becoming 'unavailable'...hmm

soontobe Wed 19-Aug-15 18:33:33

For me too.

They are coming I tell you...!

soontobe Wed 19-Aug-15 19:00:07

They have been under attack on mumsnet again this afternoon.
I dont know if that made any difference to getting onto this site or not.

soontobe Wed 19-Aug-15 21:41:52

It is such an utter mess over on the mumsnet site, that I am going to log out until it is sorted.

Ana Wed 19-Aug-15 21:44:21

You should be in bed anyway, soontobe! shock

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 19-Aug-15 22:01:37

No, soontobe! You must stay over there and help them to sort it out.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 19-Aug-15 22:03:03

You would never desert them in their hour of need, would you? smile

Don't go to bed. You are needed.

Ana Wed 19-Aug-15 22:08:45

I think soon is worried about infestation! By viruses or Angry Dads...grin

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 19-Aug-15 22:55:53

I'm not surprised this has happened to Mumsnet. For years Mumsnetters have been very ready to urge each other to leave rocky marriages, rather than work at it. Only a matter of time before cast-off dads started hating the site.

That's not to say I agree with what they are doing. Just not that surprised.

rosequartz Wed 19-Aug-15 23:17:07

Lara I changed my password for Gransnet earlier - so how come I just managed to log in when I absentmindedly used my old one?
confused

rosequartz Wed 19-Aug-15 23:22:57

I have re-done it and it seems to be sorted now blush again
