Snow on the way!

My grandparents cottage was as you describe Djen ( and also in Yorkshire) thinking about it now, I don't know how they managed to be so happy, but I suppose if it's what you are used to then you cope.Every Winter seemed to bring snow and we all had endless chilblains.

I had to wait for three weeks. Both my sons have a two week wait at smaller garages. They do not get an email to remind them.

Stanhope is in Weardale. Next Thursday is the first day that the temperature gets above 7 degrees, at midday.
St John's Chapel is even colder, six degrees is the highest.

the whole point is to get them changed early- by mid November- in readiness for cold weather, ice and snow- and then keep them on until end of March, or so (here April).

Relatives who live on a steep hill down south in Surrey had snow tyres fitted to come and visit us for Christmas a few years back. They found they made such a massive difference - as they often could not go out or shopping in icy weather where they live- and the ride so much smoother due to the softer density rubber- they kept them on till Spring- and have them fitted every winter, and asid they would buy new ones as those run out.

No-one is teaching grannies (!) to suck eggs- just thought it is worth considering if you live in mountainous areas up north- and keeps you, and others safe. If you can't see that, it is a sad state of affairs, truly- and says more about your state of mind, then that of the roads.

True, you have to enter a "place" on the BBC website, so I looked up Newcastle and Ponteland as being places I regularly drive through on my way North. Alas, the site does not recognise Weardale.
Your point about the 2week booking period illustrates exactly why many people especially south of the Trent, find the concept of winter tyres impractical unless a trip further north/to mountains/ to Bavaria or Switzerland is planned. By the time you had booked the garage to fit them (if indeed there is a 2 week wait) the weather could have changed back, back again and back to where you were a fortnight ago. So not fecklessness or sloth, just the vagaries of the British weather.

Alea, I do not think the panic is over, because you have winter tyres when the temperature is below 7 degrees. Where I live is often 2 degrees lower than Newcastle or Durham. There is no overall temperature for the North East.
Weardale, which is about ten to fifteen minutes drive, is the best area in the dales for skiing. The A68 is one of the first roads to be closed, and it is only five minutes drive away.
