As the mother of a single mum to our gorgeous DGD and realising that good, well-placed, step-dad material seems thin on the ground, I was sad to hear the news last year that James Middleton has tired of his girlfriend, Donna Air, single mum to daughter Freya, presumably because added to the baggage of a child she's just not posh enough. (Even though Freya’s dad is an Aspinall whose family is probably slightly better connected than the Middletons). Never mind, Donna who needs the arrogant scion of a jumped up working class family who suddenly believe that because their daughter has netted a Prince of the Realm they're upper class? They so are NOT! One of their ancestors was a coal miner for goodness sake. Of course if James and Donna had married her daughter would have been Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s step-cousin.

This got me thinking about an imaginary conversation between Prince George and his mummy at nursery breakfast time.

Prince George: "Mummy, please may one pass the conserve made with fresh strawberries from Granddad Charles' Highgrove garden for one's toast, there's a dear old thing?"

Princess Catherine: "Eh up Georgie love, wouldn't you prefer some yummy marmite - it's Grandma Carole's favourite."

P.G: "Oh no mummy, that's so common, I couldn't possibly eat that awful stuff."

P.C. "Nay, don't you get all la di da wi me son. We don't want ye putttin' on too many airs an graces".

P.G. "But mummy, I'm the future King of England, after you and papa have had a go of course."

P.C. " Yes, an by th' time that appens son, we'll have dumbed down the Royal family so everyone's like your Uncle Jimmy and Auntie Pippa - loads a dosh but not much between the ears. Now eat up your brekkie and start practising your Cockney rhyming slang, apples an pears - stairs; frog an toad - road - there's a canny lad eh up."

Yes, that is it, Anno The inverted snobbery of those who think that writing for a successful magazine gives them licence to acquire and flaunt pseudo-working-class attitudes and end up just being trendily bitchy. Dear K****e H*****ns comes to mind (asterisks are so as to evade the dedicated search engine she no doubt uses to keep track of all mentions of her name - I don't want to inflate her ego any further) though she would deny any plebeian connections, I am sure.

GrandmaB63 - What point are you trying to make? I've read your post a few times and can't make any sense of it.
What kind of replies are you expecting ?

merlotgran Wed 10-Feb-16 17:27:23

It wasn't funny - nothing to do with a sense of humour bypass. hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 10-Feb-16 17:31:38

It was also, harmless. No need to have got quite so het up about it. [confused

I'm sure, a couple of years back, a post knocking the Royal Family would have been received with downright enthusiasm. Where have the republicans gone? confused

GrandmaB63 Wed 10-Feb-16 18:00:53

And to be continued on "When is a blog not a blog....?" where you can all carry on this pointless discussion!!!!!!!!

merlotgran Wed 10-Feb-16 18:04:34

Are you always this touchy when somebody doesn't laugh at your jokes, GB63?

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 10-Feb-16 18:11:32

I have just put my reply to that on the 'when is a blog not a blog thread'

obieone Wed 10-Feb-16 18:19:10

op. You seem to "hate" quite a lot of groups and people?

obieone Wed 10-Feb-16 18:20:54

You seem to be annoyed on your DD's behalf?

GrandmaB63 Mon 15-Feb-16 19:41:42

"Obieone" no I don't 'hate' anyone - it was a piece of fiction!!! I have a great deal of respect for Kate Middleton and anyone else with the courage to marry into the Royal Family. And my DD has a lovely boyfriend who also has children and they both get on really well with each others' families. However, yes I would be annoyed if I were Donna Air's mum, wouldn't you?

"Merlotgran" thank you for the back handed compliment by referring to my 'joke'. Even I didn't call it that.

GrandmaB63 Mon 15-Feb-16 19:43:36

Sorry used incorrect symbols there Obieone and Merlotgran.

obieone Mon 15-Feb-16 20:07:18

If they werent suited, they werent suited. So no I wouldnt be annoyed.

Ana Mon 15-Feb-16 20:12:52

If I were Donna Air's mum I'd probably be more relieved than annoyed!

Weird, am probably extremely ignorant but just don't get what she is getting at. I am just a simple soul confused

ninathenana Thu 14-Jul-16 19:11:18

When I read about this in DM I was fascinated to know which thread it referred to as I really couldn't think of any possibles.
This thread completely passed me by at the time. I certainly can't see anything that could be classed as trolling.

Elegran Thu 14-Jul-16 19:53:17

The tone of the replies is slightly nicer than the tone of the original post. I'd say the poster misjudged her readers when she sent in that message. Starting off by putting it in a section that usually has blogs by invited and well-known and well-respected authors was possibly not a good move either. Readers expected it to be up to the usual standard commissioned by Gransnet HQ and were disappointed at what they read.

Jane10 Thu 14-Jul-16 19:56:02

Bottom line it just wasn't as clever and funny as she thought it was. Embarrassing for her I suppose.

Jalima Thu 14-Jul-16 20:05:11

In actual fact, the Original Post is very unkind.
The DM seems absolutely fascinated by the Middletons, including the romance between James and Donna, Donna's accent, and the fact that they may be back together again.
So, knowing that the Original Poster writes for the DM adds new light to the Original Post.

I think OP is flattering herself if she thinks anything she wrote actually "upset" anybody, except of course anybody with a sense of humour, who values good writing or is a connoisseur of comedic dialogue. hmm
It was neither funny, satirical, appropriate (cr*p grasp of regional dialect) topical or worth the paper it is written on space on an iPad screen .
Other than that, if I were offered it for publication in some adolescent student mag, I would probably send it back with the editorial, advice of "Try harder".
She actually gets PAID for her rubbish literary outpourings??
Hoots mon and help ma boab shock

Jalima Thu 14-Jul-16 21:04:34

Translation please? confused
Nid wyf yn deall

trisher Thu 14-Jul-16 21:08:51

It is just so bad for so many reasons. Can't believe people pay her to write- let's hope the rest is better!

DaphneBroon Thu 14-Jul-16 21:18:38

grannylyn65 Thu 14-Jul-16 21:28:34

Jayh Fri 15-Jul-16 10:11:19

Jings, crivvens, help ma boab,, Does the OP know something we don't? George will be King of England! Will Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland be independent countries by then? Who knows?
But to the point, sorry but I am not amused.
