Tea-towels and hand towels

We have a dishwasher and I use it for pretty much everything. I leave it to cool off and totally dry before putting everything away.

We also have a large draining mat that large items air dry on. I do have teatowels for little bits and bobs and if I'm cooking I have a clean one for my hands which goes into the wash when I'm dishing up.

Its not unusual for me to use 3/4 tea towels a day. Hand towels are in the downstairs cloakroom for hand washing.

I don't have a dishwasher and I use tea towels to dry cutlery and glasses. Mine are white linen and I like them to be very clean and fresh.
Tea towels hang on the cooker, and I have 2 hand towels hanging elsewhere for hands.
I'm not a fussy housekeeper but I cannot tolerate people using a tea towel to wipe their hands it just seems so unclean. I thought it was just me being odd so glad to hear I'm not alone.

I prefer to let dishes drain but OH thinks different (so he drys up). Every night I let him do the dog bowls last and then the tea towel goes in the wash. Kitchen paper is fine except OH knocked it off the work top into the dog's water bowl on Sunday (it was nearly a full roll, what a waste).

I don't really know riverwalk. I just don't like it. grin

I strongly dislike tea towels, I agree with GM that they are unhygienic and the odd bit of washing up is best left to dry itself.

We have hand and tea towels.

There were some retraining issues with Mr.L who used whatever was closest to hand. He is almost at diploma level now.

My dad was very strict about tea towels and hand towels. We were in deep trouble if we used the tea towel for our hands. I can't let go of that. It's ingrained smile

I have both the tea towel hangs on the oven door and the hand towel on a hook near the sink, wo betide anyone who uses the tea towel to dry hands and vice versa.

I have both. So does DD but her hand towels always look grubby. Wish she'd give them a really hot wash with laundry bleach.

grandMattie Tue 23-Feb-16 15:08:56

Me too, I have both. I rarely show my teatowel and insist that hands are dried on the handtowel. I maintain that leaving washing-up to drain is much more hygienci!

cathyd Tue 23-Feb-16 14:35:53

I always have both, but I am constantly having to explain the difference to my grandkids as they use the teatowel for their hands and I need to get a clean one out

Charleygirl Tue 23-Feb-16 14:31:35

I also have a dishwasher but I use a hand towel for drying my hands and paper towels for drying the odd plate or mug. I have dispensed with tea towels.

Bellanonna Tue 23-Feb-16 14:31:27

I just use kitchen roll for wiping my hands

diddy Tue 23-Feb-16 14:27:08

I always have both in the kitchen as well as a kitchen roll.

FarNorth Tue 23-Feb-16 13:42:42

Not everyone makes sure their hands are scrupulously clean before wiping on the hand towel.

I have a tea towel and kitchen paper in the kitchen but no hand towel.

I don't think it matters whether one dries hands or dishes on the towel, as both dishes and hands are clean at the time of drying!

What matters is that the tea/hand towel is clean and frequently changed.

Antjexix what possibly could be on the hand towel that would be so damaging to your DH's cup? confused.

aggie Tue 23-Feb-16 13:17:04

I have the tea towel hanging on the oven rail and the hand towel on a hook , anyone doing the wrong thing gets a flea in the ear sad

Greyduster Tue 23-Feb-16 13:12:22

I always keep a hand towel in the kitchen, and a small terry one that I tuck in the strings of my apron to dry my hands as I go when I'm cooking. Saves dashing back and forth across the kitchen, only to find DH has use it and left it somewhere else! DH can't seem to exist without several tea towels on the go (and we, too, have a dishwasher).

Antjexix Tue 23-Feb-16 13:00:53

I'm the same pollyparrot. Sometimes I catch DH drying his cup with the handtowel angry. Or even worse, people wiping their worktops with a tea towel. It then has tea, milk ect. in it and I am suppose to dry dishes with that???

FarNorth Tue 23-Feb-16 12:32:44

Quite agree polly. I wonder if those people are also the non-washers of hands discussed on another thread.

pollyparrot Tue 23-Feb-16 12:22:50

What's your take on tea-towels and hand towels in the kitchen? I have one of each on the go, even though we have a dishwasher. The tea-towel does get used for the odd thing that has to be hand washed. I change both frequently! I can't bear it when you visit someone and the same grubby tea-towel is used for hands and dishes.
