Hello!

As long as it is a friendly greeting I don't mind what it is but if it is followed by something like 'how are you? and the answer is'good' it really gets my goat! Someone I love dearly says it and so far I have refrained from telling her that it is up to others to decide if she is good or not!

Here in Southwest Scotland in the morning it is usually 'morning' then hello or hi. I have noticed that school children here are very polite and use the 'good morning' greeting. I think it must be taught in school.

I don't mind Hello, Hi or Hiya. Not so keen on Alright (or Awright)?

Our GCs were all taught Hiya first thing, as it's easy for a baby to say and sounds really cute.

Hun - what's that about?? My B and SiL use it but then they love everything American.... Grrr, puts my teeth on edge.

Here in our rural area almost everyone speaks as we pass, it's well understood that 'Hello' is the local greeting, anyone who says 'Good Morning' is clearly a holiday-maker.

'Hi' seems to be almost as much a convention for emails, as 'hello' is for answering the phone. I tailor my greeting according to the recipient. Oddly enough, my older friends and relatives have taken to 'hi' without hesitation or objection.

I use Hi in texts, hello on the phone and either as a greeting.

I don't have a problem with 'Hi' and use it most of the time myself rather than hello. Our wee granddaughter scrunchies up her face in a cute way, puts her head to the side and says hiii!

I'm slowly getting to grips with Windows 10, it was pre-installed on my new laptop. Bit of a change though!

Not heard very much now but in the South Wales valleys the most popular greeting was how be , I miss it . I use Hi in emails but never in person and I really dislike Hun

'Hello' only really came into use specifically to answer the telephone. It was the word recommended by Alexander Graham Bell as an alternative to 'Ahoy' which he first mooted.

I use it to answer the telephone but that is the only time. I no longer give out my name or even the telephone number as I was taught, too many cold callers and scammers etc. I also refuse to reply when the first sentence uttered is 'who am I talking too?'. The caller should announce who they are first.

Just to amuse myself sometimes I respond to the callow youth behind the counter at the Co-op's "Y'right ?" with, Yes, I'm fine thank you. How are you ?

I know I shouldn't but it gives me a quiet laugh.

Something I notice where I live is people saying "see yah later", when they are a
obviously not going to. Windows 10 is okay but I feel it is taking me over.

Windows10. I love it. Takes a while for all the updates to catch up, then it works very well. Hardly ever get lock ups that I got with W 8.1 etc. All my applications work well, I do tend to use open source versions of software, don't believe in having to pay for any software.

Hello PRINTMISS that explains a lot! I am still procrastinating on the Windows10 issue - I think I will download it over the Easter weekend when we are busy with family and I won't want the laptop so much. How long did it take in the end?

I think I use 'hello' the most as a spoken greeting, but 'hi' for family / friends in emails.

When .I answer the landline phone - as taught by my father - I say 'Hello .....and then my name, speaking' so the person on the other end of the phone will instantly know if they have the right number.

I just think that with me, it grates a bit, and so I notice it. Doesn't really matter, I suppose, provided I am not ignored - think I might have been feeling grumpy yesterday, having spent a long time downloading Windows 10.

It's all the Scandi stuff we're watching hey hey then tak tak.

For anyone I know is is usually Hi, I probably Hello to strangers even when being introduced, too casual perhaps.

My 2 year old DGS2 greets me with Ay up, Nana

My son starts his texts with "Hey Mum". Hey!!!

I think I use all of these greetings myself at different times, well maybe not "hiya hun"! I really don't mind how I'm greeted so long as it's friendly which is how I try to be myself. I can be formal if the situation demands it but try to avoid stuffiness even in a formal setting, it's just not me.

Creeping Americanisation - I'm absolutely guilty, I often say Hi, emails addressed to me often say Hi and I respond similarly. Either Hello or Hi is fine by me, I'm less keen on "alright"

I am guilty of using Hi in emails etc, but I use hello face to face.

Come to think of it I think I do say alright whoever. I must listen to myself.

PRINTMISS. Whilst accepting that hello is the politer version of the greeting I am perfectly happy with "hi" and use it to friends all the time. Pittcity I do get "hiya hun" too, usually from other females, but that's not something I'd use myself. Nina, I also get "you alright?" but don't use that either. I think as long as a greeting is appropriate and friendly I don't mind what it is. We also use Ciao in our family as OH is Italian. I rarely use the more formal Good Morning, or Afternoon. Just sounds a bit stuffy.
