What do you think of Boaty McBoatface?

When the National Environment Research Council asked the public for help in naming their new vessel they did not know the runaway choice would be so different to the one they intended. Boaty McBoatface is way ahead in the race. Luckily NERC will be able to discount the winning name. I think it is brilliant, typical of our humour. One of the other suggestions was to name it David Attenborough, on the face of it a more apt title. What do you think?

I think then it should be called "David Attenborough formerly known as Boaty" if they insist on something more serious. Mind you "chill out" would be my advise.

I think it's funny and we all need a laugh these days, I saw about the train and I expect it cheered up the commuters on a bad news day !

Would an Irish boat be Boaty O'Boatface? Or an aristocratic yacht perhaps Yachty FitsYachtface? It could catch on.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 23-Mar-16 10:08:49

Alishka that is so funny! grin

I love it too - and the public Gawd Bless 'Em for doing it !

It does occur to me these days, that it's generally the public that gets things right... on BBC Question Time for example, the most intelligent and thoughtful comments are always from the audience.

And whilst I know the Daily Mail is a ghastly rag... the public comments on articles written often make me laugh out loud.

It's wonderful when real people have their say... unfettered, witty and not the least bit PC.

Bring it on I say... because pomposity is a bit like virginity.

One prick and its gone !

I think if we went with Boaty it would also be a sign of our confidence in ourselves - not worrying how it looks to others. I also think people would take the Boat to their hearts and take great interest in it

It might seem funny on the surface, but when you think this ship replaces boats named Ernest Shackleton and James Clark Ross, this could be seen as present day dumbing down taken to the extreme. Surely the Brits can do better than that?

whitewave Wed 23-Mar-16 10:23:56

Did you have a good tine jing? Assuming youve been on a jaunt

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 23-Mar-16 10:24:13

Actually it doesn't even sound funny on the surface. Lame more like. hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 23-Mar-16 10:26:57

And I hope that train driver put his joke up before he had heard the news from Brussels. God help us otherwise.

Did you feel like joking yesterday?

whitewave Wed 23-Mar-16 10:27:33

I think it is probably a generation thing

whitewave Wed 23-Mar-16 10:28:21

Doesn't sound as if your break has cheered you up jing!

Blinko Wed 23-Mar-16 10:36:46

Must admit to being mystified at first by Boaty Mc Whatsit, but caught on after hearing on this thread about Trainy McTrainface. Love GardyLoo! As a Black Country woman, I did appreciate Alishka's comments about the Floozy in the Jacuzzi and the lady garden grin

Jess yes in English they're female, in French male! What are they in Welsh?

norton Wed 23-Mar-16 10:48:52

How about Jess Eales, young female British sailor.

Auntieflo Wed 23-Mar-16 10:55:48

Please, please, please let us keep Boaty MacBoatFace. It's just what we need, a bit of British silliness to make us smile. The train one certainly cheered us up this morning. Away with the moaning minnies.

Newyorker6 Wed 23-Mar-16 11:08:15

Next time my Granddaughter throws a hissy fit, I'll call her Moany McMoanface!

HannahLoisLuke Wed 23-Mar-16 11:11:44

Really made me laugh. Can you imagine the Queen naming it.

Someone on Jeremy Vine said its a ship not a boat and should therefore be named Shippy McShipface. Careful how you say it!

I love the name 'Boaty McBoatface'.

It's a warm, funny name and shows our great sense of humour.

A wonderfully inventive name.

Craftycat Wed 23-Mar-16 11:17:01

It really made me laugh. Everything at the moment is so worrying that it does us all good to have a giggle. I wish they would choose it. Following Newyorker6 I am going to call my elder GD
Whiney McWhineface.

MaizieD Wed 23-Mar-16 11:37:29

I absolutely agree with jinglebellsfrocks.

There is not an ounce of wit or humour in it (unlike the 'floozie in the jacuzzi'); it's just infantile.

Marybel Wed 23-Mar-16 11:41:57

Sounds like the kind of name I made up for things when the children were little, but hope they don't use it for the ship.

audidude27 Wed 23-Mar-16 11:48:38

Think it's a great name, hope it's selected!

GillT57 Wed 23-Mar-16 11:53:48

well, I think it is a great name and it has got lots of people (me included) interested in where this ship is going and what it is doing. If it had been given an 'appropriate' name very few of us, other than scientists in that field would have known or cared about it. And hats off to the train driver too. Yes, what happened yesterday was ghastly, tragic and unforgivable but I am sure the train driver meant no disrespect to the victims. One or two people on here need to loosen their stays.

obieone Wed 23-Mar-16 12:24:05

I think NERC should not be so serious and let the name stand.
