Packing Away Winter Garb

I'm just about to tackle my winter wardrobe today and get out the summer stuff - hopefully I might get to wear some of it as I seem to have more summer clothes than winter but I'm sure some of them will have shrunk over the intervening months I too remember liberty bodices with rubber buttons worn over the top of a vest with thick grey school knickers. My mum used to wear her bra over the top of her vest when I was a child so I naturally thought this was the norm and remember the horror and embarrassment in the school changing room one day when all the bigger girls laughed at me when I got undressed This was probably after the debacle of buying a bra far too big and stuffing it with toilet paper to make it fit!! I wonder if that's why I feel the need to keep buying them even though I already have more than enough!!

I've often wondered about the word 'May' - I really think it is the hedgerow plant that the saying refers to.

It's hot here in the West Midlands this afternoon. I've come inside as I was burning but DH is still out there sizzling. I haven't put the winter woollies away yet but tomorrow I will. Summer has come! (and about time, too...............)

Emily - thanks for the link to Patra. I rather fancy a silk blouse. Have you experience of their sizing? I'm thinking that a size 14 would equate to their Large?

I had to put sun blocker on yesterday and am just going to sit with a book and will do the same. This is the life!!!?

Yes, liberty bodices at primary school. Not many girls had them and I hated mine.
I remember horrible lisle stockings being attached to the suspenders. I think I only had them for one winter - it would probably have been about 1947.

I thought only school girls wore Liberty bodices, at the time older women still wore corsets (or Playtex Living Girdles!). Liberty bodices were like vests stuffed with cottonwool (well, that's what they felt like). The attached suspenders were redundant as we all wore 3/4 length socks with garters.

Yes, it was nice and sunny at the park today, warm enough to shed a coat but still keep on a cardie! And socks (and jeans of course)

Dont remember a liberty bodice...perhaps too poor to have one ..Mum used to make our knickers out of old clothes ..the shame !!

I sat out and felt the warmth of the sun and it was lovely!! If I were the type to take the sun, I surely would have.
So that's Spring underway and it is so nice. Good to be shedding a few layers too.

No. Been sunny but too cold even to sit out in it for long unless a bit covered up.

Has anyone got sunburnt yet? I have, been in the garden with strappy top on.

I just know that if I get out my linen slacks and summery shirts, we shall have a snowstorm , several hurricanes and a month of heavy frosts!
For everyone's sake, I'm keeping my woollies at hand until I'm sure we're having a heat wave.

I used to cut the buttons off my liberty bodice and use them as rubbers for school work. They were very effective. DM never realised what I was doing and couldn't understand where all the buttons on my librty bodice were disappearing to. I never told her.

Smithy I'm like you. Has to be at least 20C before I can take off the woollies and as the average summer temp here is 16C, summer clothes are for sun holidays or visits to offspring in SE England!

Today, I didn't wear a coat, just a woolly cardi. I was foundered ?

Well, I got all my summer tops out today, so if it rains, it'll be my fault!

I live in the frozen north, where the rule seems to be if the sun's out, it must be summer so summer clothes go on! Not for me though I am a chilly person and like it to be at least 18 degrees, needless to say the summer clothes don't get much wear and tear.

Pollyperkins, that seems to make sense....perhaps that's what they were called 'liberty'

My mother told me that the buttons were for attaching suspenders for your black stockings when she was young. They were 'Liberty' bodies as they were an improvement on the corsets worn by a previous generation.

I meant - "beginning of April"...

I always thought that "May" was the hedgerow shrub... but since there ae some in flower since the beginning of May, I won't put away my winter garb until a bit later - just have things creeping in until I have to swap one for the other.
Me too, I can't stand it more than about 23 deg - after that it is "too hot" for me!

Packed most of my winter clothes away apart from a few long sleeve cotton tops and cardigans. Just hope we get a long hot summer
