AFAIK, the Tupperware concept is that if you demonstrate something to someone, preferably in a relaxed atmosphere, and with other people around, they will be more likely to buy. Perhaps this has been superseded by sales videos on line, or advertising has become more aggressive.
As some of the previous posts have confirmed, this peer pressure and enthusiastic demonstrating obviously works - until you get the thing home, when you find out it's really only a plastic box after all, or you never even use it.
There are still some inventions around that need a demonstration to prove they're any good, but the marketing people seem to think that these should be foisted on people on those annoying little screens in the supermarket which yell at you just as you are walking past, or even real people accosting you while out shopping. In Europe this is guaranteed to put people off buying, but the American marketing "experts" don't seem to realise that.
Once or twice I have clicked on a demonstration video on line for something that I thought looked interesting. This seems a far more civilised (and European!) way of getting information - you go and look for the information rather than having it rammed down your throat at an inconvenient time.
I have some Tupperware, but haven't been invited to a party for yonks. The orange peeler is very good (a gift at a party I went to) and I bought a measuring jug/mixer thing which really does whip cream, (used to take it camping) but the markings on the side kept coming off in the dishwasher. It was replaced once or twice free of charge, because it was supposed to be dishwasher proof, but others are now available in the shops, so I replaced it.
The last kind of party I heard of was a candle party. My parents were talked into buying a set of AMC saucepans at a party once. Even my father, who had no idea about cooking, was still enthusing about the demonstration afterwards. My mother still uses them and they are brilliant and like new.
Is funeral planning a conversation you've had with your family?
