House name

We are hoping to move house to a bungalow in the next few weeks - I am hedging my bets here as I do not want to get my hopes too high and have it all fall through!

The bungalow is lovely except for its name, which is very twee and has "Y"s where "I"s should be. Not our kind of thing at all. We would like to give it a new name - probably based on the lovely big maple tree in the front garden.

Any idea for names? - I'm thinking Maple Lodge at the moment.

And has anyone ever changed their house name and was it an easy process?

It is not on a street, nor are any of the houses numbered - just names.

I used to be an ambulance first-responder in our village. Trying to find the correct house in the dark, when it only has a name, or, no name or number can take several valuable minutes which could make all the difference to a patient 's survival.

Ive always had a dream of naming a house ,'Rosebay Willowherb cottage', however I was told that this is a weed and anyway I live in an ex council house so naming it is a bit pretentious. I can only dream.

I think Catbells was Wainwright's favourite and where his ashes were scattered.

Doesn't 'Cathouse' also have unfortunate connotations?

"Catbells" is a Lakeland fell/mountain near Keswick Ana so maybe the people who named the house had been fell walkers?

Smiling at Rose Cottage. When a dear friend, no longer with us, married Mr White her name and his came together neatly as White Rose Cottage. Lovely, complete with white roses.
She can't have known about the naval slang (she would have said!!) but would be especially amused since she was a doctor who worked in sexual health clinics.

We changed the name of our house when we moved in, three years on and some mailing lists still don't have the new name. A good deal of post got lost in the early days which was frustrating. (There is no number).
I always thought a house only having a name was cool, but actually it's a bit of a pain as you always have to describe where it is, as there is no reference point in regards to numbers.....

The very first house we bought was next door to a house called 'Catbells' grin

We are considering naming our bungalow 'The Cathouse'as we have seven cats, but heaven knows what the neighbours would think!

I lived in a house once with the name "Tregurno" carved on a stone lintel above the door. Must have meant happy memories for a previous owner because none of the other houses had names. it was a house that deserved to have a name and I still miss it.

Hope it all goes through without a hitch Luckygirl smile
I like a house to have a name, it makes it feel that it belongs to you more in a funny sort of way. I like 'The Maples' and 'Maplewood' and to cover all eventualities you could always plant one or two other Maple trees if you have enough space.

The Maples sounds perfect, good luck and many happy years in your new home.

Not that I'm implying there was anything romantic about WW2.

merlotgran Wed 01-Jun-16 22:34:01

I love house names that are a romantic nod to the past. East Anglia was the site of many airfields in WW2 and many years ago I used to drive past a derelict home called Flight Path Cottage. I would imagine the occupants lying awake listening to the drone of bombers, counting them out and counting them back again.

It's long gone now - replaced by a Grand Design. I don't know if they kept the name. I know I would have done.

Niaroo.... Read backwards, "Oor Ain" ...(Our Own) in Scots!

Jalima Wed 01-Jun-16 21:57:38

Well, I never knew that either (about Rose Cottage) despite coming from a Naval family shock

Luckygirl Wed 01-Jun-16 21:40:14

Rose Cottage is definitely out then! - either an STD clinic or the morgue!

granjura Wed 01-Jun-16 20:55:53

Well I never knew- will go to bed tonight just a little less stupid- thanks.

Emelle19 Wed 01-Jun-16 19:03:12

What ever you do, do NOT name it 'Rose Cottage' - that is Navy slang for STD clinic!!

Ana Wed 01-Jun-16 18:38:13

It makes me think of a horror film, for some reason...confused

Nelliemoser Wed 01-Jun-16 18:27:36

grandMattie I am sorry but "Maison Rouge" makes me think of a house of ill repute.wink

lefthanded Wed 01-Jun-16 18:23:48

Friends of ours called their house "Number Eight". They simply counted the houses from the bottom of the lane and worked out what number it would have been if anybody had bothered to number them.

harrigran Wed 01-Jun-16 18:14:19

My cousin's house is the bungalow, his parents lived in the house at the top of the smallholding so his home at the bottom of the garden was the bungalow, logical I suppose.

1974cookie Wed 01-Jun-16 17:29:46

The house name that always brings a smile to my face is' Llamedos'.
Read it backwards and you will see why grin
Years ago, I moved into a bungalow which was called:
'The Bungalow'hmm
I am still wondering why it was given such a boring and uninspiring name. I can only assume that at the time that it was built, it was possibly the only one in the village.

Luckygirl Wed 01-Jun-16 17:16:51

Thanks for all the ideas - we are cogitating! I agree about the lodge. And yes there is a maple there, which was why this all sprang to mind.
