It isn't just low income areas either. One of DD's colleagues has been working over here for several years. She is a very highly qualified frenchwoman. Because she is flying home for a wedding and is pregnant she went to her GP (In more than affluent Surrey) for a certificate to say she was fit to fly. After a torrent of abuse about how much we hate the French (She thought he was joking at first) he then told her he wasn't a fortune teller and had no idea if she could fly! Fortunately she has the backing of her husband and colleagues and complaints have been fired off in all directions.

I don't know the answer Cassandra . It has never been possible to control peoples thoughts, if a person is racist there is little or nothing can be done . What is happening to your friends has happened to different races of people. The Jews, The Irish, people who are black, recently Muslims and now the people from Europe . The referendum gave permission to be openly racist and so some doing this. Race attacks have soared since the referendum .

Your friends need to be supported by a group of decent British people, let their children see not everyone is the same. Let them know they are needed and very much liked , tsking away their fear and hurt will be difficult . I don't see what else can be done . Not helpful sorry. I hope your friends will realise there are many who care they are enduring this persecution and want it to stop. It may calm down when these ignorant racists calm down , I do hope so.

We have Eastern European friends living and working in the UK who have been granted British citizenship. They have worked hard over a number of years here, initially in very low paid jobs many UK born people would not have considered even applying for. They have never claimed any state benefits.Their English is fluent. They have high level technical and professional skills.
Post Brexit, they are on the receiving end of now openly expressed hostility from many more people in the low income area where they live - most of whom voted Leave, and who now accuse them to their faces of taking British jobs. They feel miserable, threatened, and worry about their children. We have offered them a safe haven if needed - but think more of us need to be pro active to prevent an exodus of trained people we should value and support.
