A strange occurrence....

We came back from a walk this afternoon, took our shoes off in the hall, and when I went to put mine away, I noticed a pair of scabby Nike trainers in the shoe rack that I didn't recognise. I immediately thought they must be my son in law's as they came last weekend, having been cycling and while he usually changes his shoes in the car, he may have changed them in the house and left them behind. But they aren't his, apparently (I sent him a photo) and they don't belong to DH, they are the wrong size for my son and the only other male who has been here recently was the man who came to measure up for blinds - and I know he put his shoes back on when he went. We are flummoxed! I don't know why we have never noticed them before. Anyone lost a pair of trainers?

I've always thought it would be really scary to come back into the house knowing there was nobody there .... and hearing a lavatory being flushed. This story seems to me to be pretty well on a level with that. Looking forward to further news on the shoes!

Loads of odd stuff happens in our house, a 1950s semi, I inherited from my parents but was brought up in the house. It's quite normal to us now. Things appear and more worringly disappear. There is no creepy feeling about the place but we have just become acceptable that these things happen. Recently I was making up a hamper of home made goodies, plugged in the hairdryer to shrink-wrap the cling-film for a professional look, returned t the bedroom within two minutes and the plugged in hair dryer had gone! Never found it since.

Oh that dress Maggie, I found it hanging from the shower rail in the hotel bathroom, did you hang it there to let the creases fall out while you had a shower?

Greyduster Sun 17-Jul-16 17:28:04

That is terrible, Lilylilo sad. I tried to send an email to the blind man this afternoon, but every time I pressed 'send', nothing happened. I'll have to phone the company he works for I supposed, but I'm out all day tommorrow.

We once came home from holiday and discovered an unknown person's bra amongst our dirty laundry! It didn't fit either my daughters or me so I asked my sister-in-law, who we'd popped in to see but it wasn't hers either. To this day, it's a mystery as to where it came from!

While you're all busy finding stuff all over your houses....I lost my favourite Summer dress two years ago. Linen, square neck, bright pink, black, white horizontal stripes. If anyone finds it on a pedal bin or high rack, or possibly in a hotel wardrobe somewhere, you'll know whose it is!

Anya Sun 17-Jul-16 16:03:08

That's terrible.

Lilylilo Sun 17-Jul-16 15:50:18

Someone took my grandson's buggy from the porch and left a scruffy broken one!

Greyduster Sun 17-Jul-16 15:21:43

We'll employ a bit of artistic licence then!

Ana Sun 17-Jul-16 15:12:47

I wouldn't say size 8 was 'enormous' either for a man or a woman!

Anya Sun 17-Jul-16 15:10:52

That would make a great book.

The OP....followed by a dozen chapters each telling a different how and when..... wink

"Once again, in the small hours of the morning, she heard the mysterious creaking of the floorboards as if feet were moving on the landing. Should she wake the man snoring beside her? No, he was useless. Anyway, if they had to call in the police, he had a hole in his pyjamas where he had been scratching his backside - she couldn't have borne the embarrassment! She decided to investigate by herself. After all, who knows, the man in the size eight trainers might turn out to be - a revelation! What did they say about men with big feet?? Her heart began to flutter. But wait! Was it A MAN????" Look in for the next exciting episode "The woman with the enormous feet"!

BarbaraLornaHudson Sun 17-Jul-16 15:07:08

There's material for at least a dozen short stories here. Thanks.

Anya Sun 17-Jul-16 14:39:20

Have you noticed any other trainers missing? Perhaps the blind man, being blind, accidentally took another pair and left his behind.

VIOLETTE Sun 17-Jul-16 14:18:25

Leave them there ....measure exactly where they are from the wall, the side of the rack, etc ....take a good photo ....mark them with smart water and wait ......if you have a camera video, set it up !!! I love a mystery ...makes me laugh ! You have to let us know what happens ! Years ago, my father had a neighbour who had recently moved in, and she found a pair of gents slippers (she was a widow with no men friends !) on top of her pedal bin in the kitchen ....when she told my father, he said 'Ah - they are Mr. Pallant's ' .....the old chap who lived in that house before he died. As soon as she told me, I instantly knew who it was as well ....he always stood on the doorstep in those slippers, speaking to all of us on our way to school .........and when she moved them, they came back during the night ..........I kid you not ! ........she said she was the 7th child of a 7th child, and as such, had psychic leanings ....but I don't know about that !.....

I can see it now. Instead of 'The Man in the Brown Suit'... Agatha Christie 'The Mystery of the Scabby Trainers'!

inishowen Sun 17-Jul-16 12:30:12

Yes, I've noticed the odd shoes on the roads too. It's so weird and has puzzled me for years. As to the trainers in your house, could anyone be playing a prank on you?

ninathenana Sun 17-Jul-16 12:20:06

I've noticed that too GrandT

Gagagran Sun 17-Jul-16 12:15:40

Yes GandT - we do that too! DH once found a brand new trainer, in his size, on the beach at Southport, where my sister lived at the time.We were frequent visitors and he spent years looking out for the other one of the pair - but never found it and sadly threw his found one away eventually.

GandTea Sun 17-Jul-16 11:43:47

I have this thing about shoes etc. When driving walking etc, we often see one discarded shoe, why only one? Just watch along roads as you drive, you will see them.

Greyduster Sun 17-Jul-16 11:15:58

I'm beginning to think it could only have been the blind man (IYSWIM), but I don't remember him bringing anything in but a very large case containing his samples and measuring equipment which he was struggling to carry with both hands (I remarked upon it at the time) and he didn't open it up until he got into the conservatory. Neither of us remember picking up an odd pair of shoes and putting them in the shoe rack, but DH might have done it, absently (he swears he didn't!). My son lives an hour's drive away roses and his friends haven't been to us for years! Shame, because they were all lovely chaps.

breeze Sun 17-Jul-16 11:07:51

Don't forget to tell us when you've solved the mystery! We are all intrigued!

TriciaF Sun 17-Jul-16 11:04:03

Did you leave the house unlocked, Greyduster? If so someone might have come in and for some reason put them there.
A long time ago this happened to me, except it was a used cup and a plate on the kitchen table. I didn't think it could have been us - maybe someone had just come in, made a cup of tea, and left.

rosesarered Sun 17-Jul-16 10:45:52

My bet would be a friend of your son's ( trainers) who came to visit, having bought himself new ones on the way.

rosesarered Sun 17-Jul-16 10:44:25

What strange stories, or do some of you have memory lapses?grin
You should check out the attic though Greyduster because if those mice wear shoes they must be a helluva size!Keep us posted.
