ha ha, reminds me of DGD's toddlers' sack race which she won, but then she turned round and jumped back to the start!

I have one of those contraptions judthepud inherited from MIL. However, I was told that if a jar is difficult to open, then tapping all around the lid with the back (must be back) of a bone-handled (must be bonehandled!!) knife releases the pressure.
So far it has worked for me, leaves a few dents in the lid though.

Just throw the nail varnish away NanKate and buy another one from the £1 shop.

I hope you all (including the men) have had your nails painted red white and blue.

Holding the lid under the hot tap for a short while equalises the pressure too. You do have to dry it before trying to open it, or your hands slip on the wet jar.

To open the lids on glass jars peirce the lid once or twice this releases the pressure and makes it much easier.
Doesn't work for bleach bottles of course. grannylynn sandwich packets gggrrrr !

When we moved into our current house, we found that the kitchen door jamb was covered in doorlid marks. No other doors - just that one.

Do you remember when we used to open jars by putting the in the door jamb ?

Ana, I have tried the nutcrackers without success. Perhaps I have the wrong kind.

I have one of those, Judthepud My problem is the other hand - the one trying to hold the jar still while the contraption turns the lid. I can't keep the jar from turning with the lid (and changing hands doesn't help)

Years ago DFIL bought me this contraption which can ope just about anything. As my hands and wrists lose their strength, this object has become invaluable!

I'll try that too ana then. I have to resort to superior male strength as a rule. My pinch just isn't strong enough for those things and I just end up with painful wrists and even elbow and shoulder. Good use for redundant nutcrackers too.

anno, try a pair of nutcrackers for the bleach bottle top - it works for me!

No, it isn't you, Charley. The ultimate humiliation was last week when I was struggling to get the top off a bottle of fizzy water. A voice said, 'Let me do that for you, Granny.' An 8-year-old has a better grip than I have. But he lives in Oxfordshire and I in Cheshire.

annodomini in my case it is getting the top off anything and recently I have had to find scissors to open any paper package including an ice cream. Is it me?

Re swimming shorts, some were so flimsy it was hardly worth wearing them.

I'm taking part in the "sockputt" on ravelry. I'm having to replace all DH's socks with wider ones now he has more swollen ankles. I think that counts!

An addition to the strength test: getting the top off a bleach bottle. Ingenious solutions will also be permitted.
