I received an email supposedly from HMRC about a pending tax repayment for £198.54. It requested that I claim online by giving details of my bank, card number and verification code, Mother's maiden name, driving licence number NI number, full name, date of birth and address.
I am a retired accountant and knew that the tax reference they gave was incorrect and that HMRC would never request this by email.
It even gave the warning that if you're unsure an email is from HMRC go to GOV.UK and search for 'Avoid and report internet scams and phishing'
It certainly gave the appearance of being official and I can see how some people might be taken in. I have reported this to HMRC.
